David, I stopped by around 2:30 today, but you had not gotten there yet. If you check this while you're still at Pettit, please give me a call.

Thanks, Doug

Doug,

Just got this. Sorry I missed you. I'm still (8:30 PM) at Pettit and Cam has the car on the dyno now.

Ha!! He's in a pretty industrial area so I don't think it bothered anyone. If you think my car was noisy, you should have been hear shortly before mine went on the dyno. Two rotory race cars were here being tuned and dynoed. They're from Monkey 2 Racing and one of them is a 7 second car. They both run off of methanol and are the loudest bitches I've heard. Smell pretty bad too as I understand they add bean oil (don't ask me what kind) to the fuel for lubricant.

I took a few shots of these and I'll post them later.

Today will be a big day for me. Cam spent last night tuning the reliability of the car (thought it was pretty good already) and today he's going to tune for horsepower. We'll see soon.

Quick Update

Sorry for the delay in posting any more information but there's been a death in my family and I'm occupied for the next few days. One of my great uncles died and I'm headed down for the funeral now. I'll post more in a few days to let you know how it went at Pettit.

The short of it is that I only got one dyno run in, at a little above 6 PSI. The car did 350 RWHP and 350 ft. lbs. of torque. When Pettit hooked up the boost controller, boost went crazy. It's a long story but I'll post more on Wednesday.

Update: Final Results, Sort of....

Hi All,

I very much appreciate your messages of sympathy. I'm just back from the funeral of my Uncle Eddie in Venice FL. It was a sad time, particularly for my Aunt and my cousins. I haven't seen my Uncle in a number of years but I will always remember him for his kindness, fun loving nature and his ability to make those around him feel good. He and my Aunt traveled the world and led a wonderful life. He was 82 (my Dad's older, older brother) and he will certainly be missed.

As for Pettit, my trip last week went well - sort of. I arrived at Pettit at about 3 pm last Wednesday and in the process, just missed PalmTreeDoc who had graciously offered to come over to Pettit to take some videos. Sorry I missed you Doug, but I'll be back at Pettit in the next few weeks and maybe we can hook up then.

Once arriving, JR changed the oil in the car, and checked and tightened all connections:

Notice the black duct tape over the exhaust. Someone stated that rotaryextreme makes a plate for this. Is this accurate?

After this process, Cam took over and checked out the data logs I had made for the car as well as the Wolf map. He basically spent the entire afternoon and evening doing this - he's very detailed in his work.

Interrupted By Rotary Race Cars!!

During my tuning on Wednesday, Cam was interrupted by the arrival of two 13B rotary racing cars that used the dyno for some last minute tuning. The cars were on their way to Puerto Rico for a drag racing event. The car pictured is a 7 second methanol powered car - if you think you've heard loud cars on the dyno before, believe me, you haven't heard anything until you've heard a drag car being tuned and dynoed. It's probably the closest I've heard to a jet engine. Smells horribly bad also as they use bean oil for lubricant in the fuel.

The car dynoed at about 800 RWHP so I guess it is possible to to get that much HP out of a rotorary engine. I wouldn't recommend this for normal street driving though! I also tried to get Cam to install a parachute on my car - wouldn't it be cool to pop that baby after a race on I95?

Here is the RotaryExtreme rear bumper guard:

Go to www.rotaryextreme.com then click the 3rd gen section. Once you're in there click the Aerokit/Exterior/Hood link on the side bar, then click Rotary Extreme Aero Products then you'll see the bumper guard at the bottom of the next page

Car looks great!

Initial Tuning Completed

Now back to my car (I must admit I did feel kind of inferior after the race cars arrived). Cam insisted on checking out the car himself.

The guy checking out my car is one of the owners of the drag racers.

My buddy JJ, the shop dog. She looks forward each day to the arrival of the "chuck wagon" food service guy who feeds her scraps. Chow hound!

Finally, one shot of my recent rotary valve stems purchase from www.rotary13b1.com (also on ebay).

Cam finishes reliability tuning and then...

On Thursday at about noon, Cam finished up the final reliability tuning and decided to dyno the car to get a base map. At minimal boost, at a little above 6 PSI, the car dynoed at 350 RWHP and at 350 ft. lbs. of torque. I was very happy with this as a baseline, especially the torque level. I'll post the dyno as soon as I can get a copy from Pettit (can't find the one I printed out for some reason), but max torque is available a little above 3,000 RPMs and stays at this level thru the entire run. Cam also feels that he can increase my results with addtional tuning of the Wolf. He attended a race this past weekend and drove two cars with Wolf units installed. He was going to use the data logs from these races to improve my map.

It was about at this point though that a hell broke loose - kind of sort of. We broke for lunch and came back with the intent of tuning the car for max HP and torque. This plan quickly fell apart as boost on the car went wild. The range fluctuated from 8 - 15 PSI and never was consistent. The problem, after several hours of diagnosing, turned out to be the Profec B boost controller that I've had in my car for a few years. The solution was the installation of a new ProfectB Spec II unit. Here's a shot of Tyler from Pettit installing the new unit as well as a shot of my engine bay showing the B Cool radiator.

Cam and I then spent about an hour driving the car around to ensure that the boost controller worked properly and that low and high boost was set correctly (we have low boost set to about 8 PSI and high boost to 12 PSI). The car definately feels extremely strong and now pulls like a mother. More improtantly, boost is now consistent.

The bad news about this process is that it was a little after 7 pm by the time the issue was diagnosed and fixed. Unfortunately, because I'm about 5 hours from Pettit, I had to hit the road. Thus, I wasn't able to get the final tuning session in nor the final dyno run.

I plan on going back to Pettit within the next two weeks for a final dyno run and I'll definately post the results. I'll also take a few videos and post them as well.

congrads on the car man. Cam has always been on the up and up with me. Now all that is left is the final tune, and keeping it on the asphalt when you have it on the street.
Get a good insurance policy by the way to cover the car, just incase something does happen.
