Why do the 20B conversion?

I have owned my FD since 1994 when I bought it new (it was a gift to myself for meeting several business objectives I established at my then fledgling software company).

I have always loved the FD and its performance. Thought about selling it in 2000 but decided instead to keep it because of its classic looks. So, I began modifications to the car. I was pleased with the mods I had on my 13b and got about 320 RWHP at 12.5 PSI. The car was definately fun to drive.

However, I'm the kind of person that is always looking for something different and unique. When I read about the Pettit Banzai and was intriqued with the 3 rotor. Then had a chance to ride in Cam's car and was sold. The immediate availablity of much higher levels of torque impressed me and the overall performance was amazing. After this experience, I told myself that when I got the opportunity, I'd do the conversion. The opportunity happened recently when I sold my software company (www.tempus.com).

Yes, you can definately mod your 13b to get great RWHP but you can't match the torque available in the 20B. And I happen like both. I also happen to like the uniqueness of the 3 rotor and after all, isn't this why we buy FDs or modify our cars? To have something different than the masses?

Yes, the $35K is a lot of money but from my perspective, it's worth it and that's what it is all about!

Pretty much how I feel about it. He's getting it done...enough said. As long as he's happy.

just look at it like this.... its WAY cheaper than a porsche (at least thats how I rationalize it). and if that doesnt work, i bring out the "you'll only live once" argument. -heath

Smile 20B conversion

Must say that's how I sold it to my wife. Honey, a Porsche (actually in my case it was the new Aston Martin AMV8) is a lot more than $35K! It's a bargain, right?

She actually saw right through this argument, but said go ahead anyway!

I agree. It's your money, do what you want with it.

I like rotaries a lot, but prefered to do a turbo/LS1 swap this time around.
I hear plenty of crap from rotards about it. Do I care what they think? Absolutely not.

Keep us updated David.

I thought you were using a different EMS that Pettit was familiar with. Did your plans change?

David,

You clearly have good taste. I think the AMV8 is a fantastic looking car, but it's not very powerful, and as of last week they're still at least a year off. In the end I think the 3-rotor will be a lot more fun.

On a side note, a friend of mine recently spoke to the AM factory about shoe horning a Vanquish motor into the AMV8. Apparently they weren't opposed to doing it, but said it would cost him about 2x what you're paying for the 3 rotor conversion!

jimlab,

the Wolf is what Cam selected. He's tuned the unit before so he felt it was a good choice. I pretty much left it up to him to pick. Thought the Wolf was supposed to arrive last week - still waiting.

I love the looks of the AMV8 - almost had the same emotional reaction to it as when I first saw an FD. Haven't seen the performance specs on the car though, was pretty much going by its looks.

Heck, I can do the 3 rotor conversion, drive it for a year or so and then look into the AMV8 if the urge is still there. FYI - attached are a few pics of the Aston Martin.

OK, I thought you'd mentioned a different engine management system earlier in the thread, but didn't want to go searching for it.

I love the looks of the AMV8
I could do without the "harelip" grill myself.

I believe you're wrong.

"A congenital abnormality in which there is a cleft or split in the upper lip. The condition frequently occurs along with a cleft palate, an opening in the roof of the mouth. Harelip is usually corrected by plastic surgery soon after birth."

That didn't really prove it wrong Jim lol. That basically said that cleft lip can consist of *just* clefting of the lip, OR clefting of the lip *accompanied by* clefting of the palate. I can tell you though, "cleft lip" is the more general and commonly used medical term. Subtle difference tho...so I think we're both right

The more politically correct (and therefore modern) term, perhaps. "Harelip" dates back to the 16th century.

BTW, when are you going to learn that I'm almost always right?

Wow, this thread really has taken many strange twists! Don't pass judgement on the AMV8 until you see it in person. Aston Martins look fantastic.

Anyway, just found out my 13B engine is for sale on ebay. Here's the link if any of you are interested:

Speaking of which, how much credit did Pettit give you for it? I assume that it was in good running condition when it was pulled?

Did you see what Pettit is asking for most of their stock parts on eBay? Wonder if they all are from David's car? $120 for a stock intercooler?!!??!

Pettit has always held their parts in "high regard".
