Import my JDM FD
Import my JDM FD
I'm sorry if this is not the right place to put this thread, but I can't find anywhere else. I have a 92 FD JDM here in Germany, and the Army is relocation me back to the states. Does anyone know how to import my car to the states?
Don't know if it's too late or not but you are allowed to bring one vehicle back with you if you were stationed there...if you're married you can bring 2 back. your platoon sgt should be able to get you the info, if not he can set up a meeting fro you and your 1sgt and he should have the info...hope it goes well for ya
I think the problem comes after you get ot hte states to register it legally I've heard some states will allow you to , while others are more strict ..
In fl I've seen a few RHD cars but supposedly its illegal until the car is 25 years old.

Dnt sweat the legalities....an fd is on the allowed import list to the us....once it is here you will take your h7 form and your other oapers that the exporting company will give you to the us custom on the recieving end. The only thing that stops imports is epa and nhtsa. Your car is an fd, however not the year for american import. You have to petition the nhtsa to allow the car based on the fact similar models are allowed here. Then have the glass and stuff checked for compliance by an ri (registered importer) and they will make it 100% federally and state legal. Your not importing a skyline so its easier for you. Go to jk technologies website, they are an RI and deal.commonly with military. They can tell you everything
If a car is right hand drive, USDOT requires data showing whether or not the right hand drive vehicle will have the same results that the left hand drive vehicle would have in a crash. Crash testing is an extensive project that requires purchasing more than one vehicle of the exact year, make and model to be crashed. The petitioning time takes longer than the normal petitioning process.
Being that i have imported my own share of right hand drives i know that his fd can be imported without crash test data....it has been done soo many times before. I told him to.contact jk because they have access to all the fd data, rhd and lhd...with another car you would be right but the fd rhd 93-95 has been crash tested...and since the imperial year is no longer valid, his car is a 93
off topic slightly...any idea how the bond works if the car isnt on an american appraisal listing? for example...i have 3 r34 gtrs in japan, all spec v...but i want to know what the value is when i bring them in. trying to get a crash testing set up but the value of the car here is insane, whereas in japan they are fairly cheap. average 7-10k for one. i emailed jason at jk but he hasnt got back with me yet. he said they usually use a general basis on prior models and styles but the r33 skyline which is 100% legal to import doesnt even list on kbb so cant use that either
EDIT: nevermind, your previous post stated that they do indeed have relevant RHD FD crash test data.

"[Can I import a RHD FD from Canada?] No, not without a letter from Mazda stating that right hand drive cars
crash the same as left hand drive cars in a frontal FMVSS 208 impact crash
and they have never to our knowledge provided this information. The other
way would be for us to crash a car and this does not seem very cost
effective to us."
So street use RHD FD's in the states are a no-go.
I dnt think o conners are spec v's, but no im not and no, thats not my name. I just so happen to have joined the army and bern stationed in japan a few times and have some good friends there....7k will get you a gtr r34 in japan also just think, if you could buy one for 7k and drive it.....how many would you own...im sure everyone here paid more then that for their rx7 fd if it ran...unless you got lucky.
if the op wants to import their rx7 i will give you my contact from jk technologies that did my rhd a few years ago...supras and rx7s are very common to come thru them. Thanks
