Nice fabrication work, the car looks like a real beast! Are their any local rotary gurus here in Colorado? Where are you going to get this thing tuned at?

cohbra 10-12-11 12:54 AM

Thanks for the compliments guys.

@CO318is, I'm sure there are probably a few gurus around here, but I don't know any. I've always done all of my own work, with the exception of a final tune on the dyno. I hope to start some of my initial tuning tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully the local rotary club will get Steve Kan back here in the spring. It's been a few years since he's been here, so I guess we're overdue.

The base map I am using is from BDC's website that I modified by adding more fuel to be safe, and by retarding the timing from P10-P20. There were a few other changes I made, but not many. The map was for a very similar setup as mine, ie. 850/1680's, 3 bar map sensor, street port, etc.

With that being said, right now, it idles like crap! Tonight I adjusted the TPS which was out of whack, but I haven't been able to check it out yet. I am hoping that it will idle better in the morning when I don't have to worry about waking up the wife/kids/neighbors. It does sound pretty mean, but I don't have any exhaust on it from the mid-pipe back. I will have to take it to an exhaust shop to have a new mid-pipe made up so that I don't have the old hollowed out cat in there anymore.

This really sucks! It looks like I'm going to have to pull the tranny. I can't get the clutch to pull in. I'm thinking that the little wire ring between the pressure plate and the disc is not where it should be.

cohbra 10-13-11 07:48 PM

After pulling the transmission this afternoon, I finally found out what my problem was. Like an idiot, I put the clutch disc in backwards. That was a big waste of time... I wish I would have been paying attention the first time around. Now I can finally get it out of the garage tomorrow and work on the idle.

kick ass build, keep up the great work man! :D

mannykiller 10-14-11 12:35 AM

Gotta love the easy mess ups though... They always make for great stories. Can't wait for more !

Fortune_Seven 10-14-11 12:45 AM

Awesome build, looks amazing! your fab skills and attention to detail really come through. How did the shift console turn out?

cohbra 10-14-11 08:00 PM

I wasn't happy with the shift console so I started over on it. I am learning more and more about how to work with this CF fabric. I will try to put up an update tomorrow since I just started working on it again.

Hey Cohbra, not sure if I saw any pics of this, but is your turbo water cooled? If so, what kind of lines did you run out of the water housing. I saw your custom water fill neck, where does that ss line run to?

cohbra 10-15-11 07:22 PM

Yes, the turbo is water cooled, but the SS line is for the oil feed.

cohbra 10-19-11 05:06 PM

I decided that I wanted to be able to log my EGTs so that they would be more useful to me so I ordered a pair of these from the Sensor Connection. They have a nice digital readout as well as a 0-5v or 1-5v output on them and a relay output alarm contact.

Easy enough!

Installed my CF side skirt add-ons tonight too. I'm not sure what to think about them. I like how it makes the car look a little lower, but I also like the more simplistic look.

you need wheels!!! ....but if you could take a side profile pic of the car so we can see what it looks like from further away!

mrb63083 10-20-11 02:35 PM

Beautiful. Absolutely amazing craftmanship and frabrication skills.

cohbra 10-20-11 07:24 PM

I wish I had some cash left over for wheels but I already spent it all. I will gladly accept donations though :)

Tomorrow I am hoping to get it out and wash it, so I'll take some better pictures then. Maybe I'll even use a real camera instead of my iPhone.

cohbra 10-20-11 11:53 PM

I went back to work on the center console tonight. I didn't take any pictures of the process, but there wasn't really much to see.

I used some Glad Press'n Seal to line the hole where the ash tray used to be and poured a bunch of fiberglass resin in there to use as a form. This way I am able to stretch the fabric over the console, and then press the form back in. I also used a heat gun to soften up the fabric to allow it to stretch more. Hopefully a few days in this state will be sufficient to allow the fabric to develop a memory of the shape, and stay pressed down in the tight corners so that it will not try to pull away afterwards.

In a few days, I will remove the form and apply the contact cement to only the hole where the PFC Commander will be, then reinsert the puck for another day. After that has fully cured, I should be able to go back and finish the remainder of the piece and stretch the wrinkles out of the corners.

cohbra 10-23-11 08:38 PM

Had to redo my gauge cluster as well because I tried to stretch the fabric back into the recessed area under the hood and it started pulling away. This time I made an enclosure for the rear and hooked it up to the shop vac so that I could use a heat gun and make the fabric take on the memory of the shape before gluing it on.

I also finished up my center console piece today. I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

We're supposed to get a decent amount of snow here tomorrow night so I finally broke down and finished welding up my exhaust that I've been putting off so that I can get it out of the garage in the morning. I want to get it out and give it a bath for the first time so that I can get some decent pictures of it before I have to leave town for work again, which should be any day now.

mannykiller 10-24-11 10:05 PM

Love it all.... Gotta get pics before you head out!!

cohbra 10-25-11 05:39 PM

Just as I had planned, I got it out today and washed it. I also managed to start working on my tune, but that's a whole different story, which I may revisit here in a few days depending on how much snow we get tonight and how long it hangs around.

Here's some better pics.

Wow, the weatherman wasn't kidding! It looks like I won't have the 7 back out of the garage for a while.

Yeah, we got dumped on pretty bad up here in Northern Colorado, too. Lots of broken trees and I woke up with no power or heat!

FD is looking good man.
