What turbo are you using again? I've heard a few of the aspec 500r's had some problems. Some being bad right off the bat.. But that really is unfortunate. But your ignition problem on that rear rotor or front rotor... (cant remember) isn't good news then. Same thing happened with me. Noticed a little bit of oil. Car drove fine.. compression was fine, but the oil control ring was no bueno.. Pulled the exhaust manifold off to see a nice little puddle of oil in the housing. =rebuild time. So in this case.. I guess just hope it's the turbo rather than the motor.

Motor was rebuilt by Pineapple Racing and turbo was brand new. Both have about 40 miles on them only putting around the neighborhood so far.

Seeing how dated a sequential turbo system is with vacuum lines compared to a single.. Makes me really appreciate single.. Goodjob with your car build.

Theres a lot of carbon build up on that rotor... Maybe they didn't do as thorough job as they should have..

It was clean when it I got it back from them. All of the carbon buildup must be from the massive amounts of oil in there since the first start. The car has been smoking like crazy since the first time I started it up. I was assuming it was due to me being over cautious when I premixed the first 5 gallons of gas that I put in the tank as well as it running really rich because it smelled like fuel to me.

Headed to the gym for a bit, then spending the afternoon in the garage trying to figure out for sure if it is an oil control ring leaking, or if it is the turbo leaking oil back down into the engine. My gut tells me it's the oil control ring, but I really hope that I'm wrong.

We're in the same boat. Except my rebuild has about 30k miles on it and it's my fault. After I had an oil line blow off, my rear rotor started spitting lots of oil, but I hoped it was the turbos dripping back in. I ran my car without any turbos bolted up...still leaked oil. :(

Hopefully it's just the turbo in your case, but if it is the motor I hope they warranty that for you.

I spoke with Rob from Pineapple Racing and he was very helpful and polite. Since I had already removed the turbo from the car, I followed one of his recommendations to remove the housing from the exhaust side of the turbo and see if there was any oil coming from behind the dust shield. Oil is exactly what I found coming from the area where the arrows are in the picture below. I cleaned it up a lot before I took the picture. Also, there is quite a noticeable amount of play in the shaft which sucks. This thing is supposed to be brand new! Hopefully Jason @ the RX7 store can warranty it for me even though I ordered it in February 2010. This is the shitty part about having to travel so much for work. The warranties have expired on everything I've bought before I've had a chance to install/use them.

^ well thats good news? just in-case maybe you should fire the car up without the manifold on. You'll know right away if there's oil or not. Have someone start the car while you watch the exhaust ports. Little to no flame = excess oil in the housing.. both flame equally... = healthy for the most part. Bring Ear plugs.. talk about loud as Eff...... My neighbors came out when I did it...

Sure enough, I had bad plugs again. What the hell? I picked ups some BUR9EQ's from the local auto parts store to just throw in and see if that was my issue, and it fired right up. I don't think I'll ever try using the B10EGV's again, that's two bad sets from two different sources now.

I talked with Jason @ the RX7 store and he said that the oil and smoking was probably due to the fact that I wasn't running a PCV valve. I'm not sure I understand how a PCV valve will affect oil leaking out of the turbo and into the exhaust, but I'm putting it all back together to give it a shot. The good news is that it is not coming out of the motor.

I got it all back together and fired it up but after I pulled it out of the garage it died on me and there was a bunch of white smoke billowing out from under the hood from an obvious electrical short. When I opened the hood I found this...

Yup, not sure why either. I just moved my coils to the frame rail and re-wrapped the harness to clean it up, but I didn't make any modifications to it. I added a ground strap from the coil mounting bracket to the ground point on the front iron by the spark plugs, but that shouldn't have done this. I read something about there being an issue with the ground on the coil harness causing arcing or feedback or something like that and frying the leading coil or wiring. Apparently, Mazda stopped putting a ground wire on the harness because of this. My lead coil signal wire appears to be where the short started too.

Talk about humble beginnings. You should be proud.

Had a great day today. I spent a little more time this morning tweaking on the throttle body and managed to get it to where it idles much better. Actually, it's really smooth at about 800 rpm. The new ignition harness and ditching those P.O.S. B10EGV plugs for some stock BUR9EQ's did the trick on my ignition problems. Also, it appears that the smoking has stopped after putting the PCV valve back in as Jason at the RX7 Store recommended. Washed it, waxed it, and put about 30 miles or so on it. I think that tomorrow I'll attempt to venture a little further from the house.

I should be home from work this weekend so hopefully I can put a decent amount of miles on the car to get past the break in period and start tuning for boost. If there is anyone in the Denver area who has a lot of experience tuning, and will work for beer and BBQ, shoot me a PM. (Must be 21 of course for the beer part ;))

Maybe I'll even get the Go Pro Hero II camera out that I bought my son (myself) for his birthday :) and get some video for an update.

Well I know one tuner that tuned his own and another FD but never met him though or got tuned by him. He is in the Colorado Mazda Club forum so you might wanna contact him through there, I don't know if he has an account here in the 7club but his name is Dave (Chickenwafer) on the local forum.
