when is AI really neccessary?

Ive been told that since I live in a hot climate (phoenix,AZ) and would like to run around 20 psi on pump gas that i definately need an AI system. Ive read several posts and it seems that most of the guys who run AI really know their stuff when it comes to their cars. Being that Im realitively new to rotaries Im not sure if Im ready for an AI system. Id rather someone say turn the boost down and be safe than to push the envelope with the chance that Ill blow up my new ride. I will have the aem standalone which might have the capacity to control a good ai system. Id love to hear ideas from those with ai systems in order to determine whether or not this is something im not ready for. All questions or general comments appreciated. The turbo is a innovative turbo system with plenty of fuel to support the 20psi without running lean if that helps.

living in Phoenix and having a modded rotary requires AI.

you will need to make an investment of time to understand both your new FD and AI. if you don't you will be melting motors.

the AEM EMS has the capacity to map shift. you can set up a pump gas map to whatever boost your car will safely make and then retune using the Nitrous Map Option on the AEM so a different map gets shifted into when your AI pump engages. that way if you blow a fuse on your pump the engine doesn't lean out as there will be no Map Shift. the Active Knock feature on the AEM also can work to your advantage in that it can be programmed to add fuel and reduce timing under a specified knock situation.

the AEM EMS does not have the capability to act as an AI system. it will of course feed boost and other signals to an AI system.

BTW, the AEM is a very complex standalone. it does require a highly competant tuner.

an AI system properly selected and tuned will be the most important system on your FD in Ariz.

good luck,

any suggestions on which one would work for me. i really dont ever plan pushing more than 25psi on the engine at any point. ill probably get the suggestions from the tuner as to what thresholds i can safely boost at even with an ai system.

have a look at my threads on water for an *option* that is proven.

I have a few combo's running right now that deliver 345rwkw @ 20 psi boost (630bhp engines) on pump and water day in day out with least amount of hassels and greatest simplicity.
