The Renewable Fuels Foundation states in its Changes in Gasoline IV manual, "There is no requirement to post octane on an E85 dispenser. If a retailer chooses to post octane, they should be aware that the often cited 105 octane is incorrect. This number was derived by using ethanol’s blending octane value in gasoline. This is not the proper way to calculate the octane of E85. Ethanol’s true octane value should be used to calculate E85’s octane value. This results in an octane range of 94-96 (R+M)/2. These calculations have been confirmed by actual octane engine tests."

If I'm understanding the paragraph above its saying the pure ethanol is 105 octane. Once mixed with fuel the octane drops to 94-96.

denatured alcohol is not methanol, it is ethanol which is denatured with a bit of methanol to render it un-drinkable. ethanol (or ethyl alcohol, or corn alcohol) is the same stuff in booze, so they add methanol (a type of poison) to make it that way.

you might need to tune for it, stoich for methanol is lower than stoich for ethanol, so you might need to add a bit of fuel

Not the same.

sen2two, how much methanol do you need?and how often? I buy '99.whatever' pure methanol by the 55 gal drum for making my fuel. You might check with chemical companies in Orlando to see what quantities they sell in, some will break a drum for you and sell you 10 or 20 gals. If not, I can find a small drum a bring you some on our next 'trade day'
