Turbo Rotary survived the 24Hrs of Lemons

If you dont know what the 24 Hours of Lemons is then check out this thread
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...4#post10342374

This was the first turbo rotary ever entered in the race, there has been many many rotary's but this was the only turbo one.

My main consurn was keeping a boosted rotary happy during the entire 19 hours of beating it to death

You really cant spend alot of money on these cars, so most of the stuff done is DIY or used stuff. Anyways here is how i did it, with Redneck Water Injection

Parts needed
5 gallon Ozarka Bottle with plastic holding container
Rubber line for suction
12V RV Style Water pump (Pressure switch bypassed)(Threaded the inside of the RV style water connections with a NPT tap)
Pressure Gauge
Boost Pressure Switch
Nitrous solenoid
Some left over ss Nitrous lines
Varous Compressor fittings
A Reducing Port Connector (as the spray head)

Specs on the Car
Stock S5 Turbo
Stock FC Intercooler (Top mount)
Stock Fuel System
Stock Boost (It was suppose to be stock but the creep was all the way to 14psi)
ECU Cheap Aftermarket
Stock Turbo II Fuel Pump

I used the boost switch to open the solenoid and turn on the water pump, and on a stock FC Turbo Intercooler I installed the spray head into the downstream side of the intercooler so that it was spraying all the way thru the air coming thru the intercooler.

To make the Spray head i use a vise to compress the ss pipe Reducing port connector down untill the spray pattern was a nice fan, i went all the way down to approx 250cc/min with this type of spray pattern. Spraying into a 20ml water bottom for X mins is how i figured out how much water was spraying, and wanted approx 12% ratio to fuel.

This wasn't really a how to, just a it can be done without a high dollar kit thread.

After it was all said and done, we went thru about 13 gallons of water for 19+/- hours of hard road racing.

While we where racing we had a fuel pump starving (due to low fuel in corners and because of rust in the fuel tank that plugged up the fuel filter in the tank) Both of these could have easy blown the motor.

Here are some pictures of the setup.

I could not find the pump pictures that I thought where online, I will try and get them shorty.

I saw this system in person while helping to tune the ecu.
I nominate Chuck for the Mazda Rotory Ingenuity Award for 2010.

Chuck had a large part in keeping it going for the entire time, with a very conservative tune

Very cool to see this pan out for you. It also goes to show that while there are some very cool and advanced systems out there, that the basics will still get it done.

That type of abuse is a big testament to how much water injection can help turbo rotaries.

Looks like something out of a "Jules Verne" novel.

cool stuff, but what up with the coffee pot?

i had the same idea for a cheap water injection setup, utilizing the factor oil injectors, modified of course. and then boost pressurized tank. what did it place?

Placed 22nd out of 50

But this was with approx 3 1/2 hours of other problems, DO NOT BUY EBAY SS BRAKE LINES!!

It was the brand Apex Brakes (http://apexbrakes.com/ssl.asp) JUST SAY NO, they are even DOT approved, we had all new lines, while in the pits after a driver change they melted and blew out of the crimp connection. We think it was the heat from just coming off the track, but normal SS lines dont have a problem.

We were -203 laps down from the leader, are fastest lap was 1:33.578, in that down time we could have made about 136 laps, that would have put us in 7th place at finish.

I didnt get the "Jules Verne" novel, want to explain that one?

O the coffee pot was are theam for the car, are other RX7 has a exhuast powered BBQ pit, this was a Rotary Powered Coffee Pot, using the engine coolant with a heat exchanger to heat the coffee water then a pump to run the coffee pot. Worked very well, only takes about 5 mins to brew a pot from a cold engine. A hot engine and you can have coffee in about 1 min.

This was a 24 hour straight race so coffee was appropriate
