Wood-Gas rotary? Has anyone done it (If it all possible?)
Not well versed in this, really just a silly idea in my head if you were crazy enough to want to use an Rx-7 in the end of times. Is it possible to run an a rotary off of woodgas? Has anyone tried? Sounds like a very fun (albeit utterly pointless) experiment. Adding on to the topic of an "Apocalypse RX7," what alternative oils could a rotary run on? Ive heard about people running random stuff on veggie oil, frier oil, mcdonalds grease, and whatever else.
Sure, just pull the Gazogene unit off your Panzer tank and plop it on your FD RX-7 LOL
But yes, rotary engines work very well off gaseous fuels as the spark plug and hot bits of the combustion chamber are completely separated from the intake chamber/cycle so auto combustiin is not an issue.
I guess you dont have to haul your fuel plant around on your RX-7 loading wood chips like a remote operatimg Panzer. Could just have pressurized wood gas cylinders and stay real close to home (poor range and power on wood gas).
A biography on Bert Munro (of Indian fame), did mention him running a motorcycle around NZ during the war with a gasifier, so they could be a little smaller than the picture.....can't remember if wood or charcoal.
Shanks pony would probably not be a lot slower though!
When I was in Junior High science, we condensed wood gas in a classroom experiment. Heat wood in a closed container (popsicle sticks in a test tube, stopper, glass tube to glass condensing coil in this case), the resultants were tar, water and methanol in the collection test tube after compensating. I don't know how well precompressed wood gas would work.
