Sell me on the DBW conversion/module

I'm considering this conversion with my FD
I'm running a modular PNP, so I have room for the small module

What is everyone's experience with this conversion? It seems fairly simple from a mechanical standpoint, but does it have significant benefits?

It should help improve idling and make it easier for someone to install traction control and/or cruise control. What else does it help with? It is easy to implement into an already-tuned car? Does it require significant adjustment to your tune?

DBW has a few benefits. Here's the gist of it:
  • Maintaining Boost via Throttle Body Closure Strategies = Less Lag in the system
  • Transient Fueling can be tighter since you're now calculated on throttle blade percentage vs. surface area which dictates mass flow
  • Cleaner Appearance. No idle air control, no cables, etc. Just a few 22ga wires (usually 6).
Here's my suggestion for using them: Stage the intake manifold. Big Single Throttle Body has a downside of velocity loss and a stock throttle body stages pri/sec mechanically. I have multiple articles and videos explaining how to do this.

As for the ECU setup, Adaptronic doesn't seem to have the complexity of table axis selection that I'd want to use a smart air mass calculation. Straight up, it's not programmable enough for the task at hand to truly extract the most from a DBW setup. It was definitely an afterthought to add this module.

  • Idle control is great
  • Cruise control can be programmed (you need to make sure the brake switch and clutch switch are functioning)
  • Traction control can be used to limit throttle and overboost as well. (For traction control to work you will also need the realtime module in order to have speed sensors on all 4 tires - if you already have the lambda module I suggest going to a CAN base wideband )
  • As for implementing it on a car that is already tuned it should have little not no effect on the tune unless there is a significant increase or decrease in air flow. Your transient throttle would most likely need to be adjusted as the DBW in most cases is significantly faster than a mechanical throttle.
  • I have setup multiple cars with drive by wire setups and with the understanding of the software it is relatively easy to setup.
Hope this helps your decision

Cheers,

Shawn Christenson
