Cruise control related idle problem

Hey guys, I've got an 85 gsl-se. I've had the car for a little over three years and since the day I bought it, the cruise control didn't work. Not a big deal, I don't daily drive it so I never use cruise control anyway. I've been going through the engine trying to clean it up and get rid of any clutter that I don't need. And I've always hated how goofy the cruise control cable looked wrapped around in the engine bay. I decided to remove it. When I started the car back up it ran normal, but when I pulled off and stopped at the next stop sign the car stalled. It continued to do this every time I put it in nuetral. I limped the car back home and looked everywhere for a vacuum leak I created. I couldn't find any. I turned it back on and the same thing happened. It idled normal when I cranked it up but then started to stall once I put it in gear. I'm 99% sure it's not a vacuum leak. Like I said earlier, I've only owned the car for 3 years so I'm by no means a rotary expert. I'm not even an piston expert for that matter. My theory is that the cruise control cable held the throttle in place at idle and now that it's gone the throttle drops below where it's supposed to be. I know I've read that the throttle cable needs to be a little slack. Does mine have too much? Anyone else have a theory or had this problem before? Thanks for taking the time to read this. One of the best things about owning a rotary is the support from fellow enthusiast.

The cruise control system doesn't apply any pull on the throttle unless you engage the cruise control (and it's working...). That said, what you describe is probably a problem with your throttle stops which may have changed position since you removed your cruise control parts.

Idle on an -SE is easiest set by adjusting the throttle stop located on the right side of the cast iron theottle body. Look for a small, flat blade head machine screw with a small lock nut. Screwing it in will keep the primary butterfly from closing all the way, hence increasing idle speed. Good luck, and hang onto the cruise control parts, as there are guys like me still trying to keep our Cruise Control systems working!
