Flex Fuel ?

Running Fd plug and play set up

Today I decided to try and figure this out. I watch the adaptronic flex fuel video a few times. When I opened the ecu case I see that mine looks different to the one that's shown in the video. I don't have the cas3 pin. Watched the video again and in the video it states that on other ecus its wired to the diagnostic port and it says to wire it to that. This is where I get confused. I am running aem coils and I used the diagnosis wire in the black box by the headlight. Is this the same wire or am I getting it mixed up.

This is one of my last things on my to do list before i go for a tune. All help will be appreciated.

Hi!

There are two versions of the ECU hardware. The earlier one has the body which is 160mm long (6.3") and the later one is 130mm long (5.1"). The smaller ones are easier to fit into the factory locations which is one reason we made the change, and we also got rid of the internal connectors because people seemed to not want to open the ECU to get to the extra functions, so instead they come out to the factory ECU header.

I'm in the process of doing another full software / firmware release with all the basemaps / diagrams etc updated right now, but until then, here are the pinouts:

CAS3 / Flex fuel input - pin 1D. Datalink connector white / red wire
Ignition 4 (ignition leading rear) - Pin 1I. Dataling connector light green / yellow
Aux temp input (eg for oil) - Pin 1U - fuel temperature sensor
Rear right wheel speed input if you're going to 4 wheel speed inputs - pin 2A (no wire from factory)
Front left wheel speed - pin 2F (no wire from factory)
Front right wheel speed - pin 2H (no wire from factory)
Rear Left, use factory speedo input pin 1M

I also want to add to this that if you are running E85, or any fuel that doesn't have a stoichiometric of 14.7:1 you need to change your injector input size to reflect this difference.

So for E85 reduce your injector size by 33%. The reason you need to do this is for the internal VE calculations. Obviously only necessary if using VE tuning.

In the future there will be a button to select fuel used, but there are too many other udpates in the works.

Why not have a setup for a flex fuel sensor that adjusts automatically for a flex fuel sensor that bases it's trim on the percentage of ethanol in the fuel?

Monkman, we do, that's what the flex fuel function is.

The fuel trim table should in theory be at zero because the ECU already compensates for the different stoich ratio of the variable ethanol mix. The trim table is just there so you can fine tune it. Normally it should be within ±5%.

So why reduce injector size? Or is that for those not wanting to run a flex fuel sensor?

I wouldn't recommend it unless a person plans to check the fuel for ethanol content before filling up every time. I have seen too many people get bad batches of e85 that was closer to e45.

I'm dreaming of the day where I can run E85 at all times, but the closest ethanol station is some 65 miles away. I like the idea of running a sensor so that when I do have access to it.....I could use it and just rely on the sensor to pick it up. Fill up and go.

If you are running E85 all of the time without the Flex fuel sensor this is the only time when you need to reduce the injector size by 33% percent. Otherwise if you are using the flex fuel sensor just input the normal injector size.


Next firmware will have a button for this, and will display current E85 percentage( with flex fuel sensor fitted) in the gauges pages. It is currently only available in the F11( ECU DATA) page with the flex fuel sensor fitted.

We've also got E85 percentage vs boost coming, and a few other things in terms of E85.

So basically if you are using the Adaptronic for boost control, it will vary your peak boost pressures vs the alcohol content. So if you are running 30+psi with E85, and it goes down to E50, you could have it set to lower you boost pressure down to 18psi or any desired boost pressure. This way you don't reach the limits of your octane even if you're AFR/IGNITION timing is correct. Just another cool thing in the works...

Flex Fuel Sensor Wiring can be wired into either the MVSS2, CAS3, OR SVSS1. I am going to break it down for just the SVSS1;

For those interested in how well the flex fuel sensor software works, we put the theory to the test today.

I tuned one of our cars on pump gas with a flex fuel sensor fitted, and then turned the first tier of automatic adjustment on( adjust stoich values in VE mode), and it worked flawlessly. Zero adjustments were needed to the map with a 50/50 blend of E85 & 91 octane. I will do the same with full E85, but I am pretty sure it will not need any change. You can also view how much the ECU is enriching based on the E85 content in the F11 screen( along with ethanol percentage etc).

E-85

I heard that if you leave E-85 in a cup and let it evaporate, it will leave a gummy substance, and this will clog injectors? True or false?
