You want a custom sub box?

I built a sub enclosure for my third gen that everyone thinks looks great. I build speakers as a hobby and this was a quick project. If you guys are interested I could supply this as a kit that you assemble; wood only. The enclosure holds one 10" driver and is built from 5/8" MDF with internal bracing; internal volume is about .75 cubic feet. It fits perfectly between the shock towers and the front is slanted to fit behind the trunk seperator. You must however remove about 12" of the foam padding under the trunk carpet to make the enclosure fit under the strut brace.

I would ask for $80 per kit + shipping to you. You would need to assemble the enclosure, add your wiring and upholster or paint it. Mine is in vinyl that matches the stock interior perfectly. I could cut custom holes on an indiviidual basis for additional money.

If at least 6 of you are interested I would do it.

Here are images links of mine installed:

http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?...699&Sequence=0

http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?...805&Sequence=0

Reply here or email me with questions; I would need to run them all at once as I have access to a CNC mill.

ALright guys, you have to right click on the link and then cut and paste the image address into the address box. It works for me, let me know if it doesn't work for you.

looks like you cant go directly to the links, but if you copy the link and paste in your address box then it'll show the pics

nice design, is it easy to pull out and put in?

i heard that it is best to point the sub up at the rear hatch glass. how does it sound with the sub pointing back?

Inside a small enclosure like a car, it makes absolutely no difference which way the speaker faces; the driver is just pressurizing the interior. I use a JL Audio driver and it sounds terriffic. To take it out all you have to do is remove the two bolts in each end of the strut brace and disconnect your wires. No problem.

I autox with mine installed; I never bother to remove it.

I'd be interested, tired of my sub sliding around.

I really have to disagree with this statement. I have made several boxes with several different drivers to try in my RX-7 and position and direction of the driver are important. I too use JL and I've tried Dynaudio & Boston subs in my car too. I try it all. In my friends RX-7 from way back (2nd gen) we played around with 2 8's firing forward or backward. We decided backward sounded the best. I do agree that small cars are different beast, but I still think that direction and placement are very important.

PLACEMENT can effect response in sub frequencies, DIRECTION does not. You can orient the cone of a sub any direction you want for a given point in space and get the same response, but moving the placement of the sub WILL affect response depending on if you have it postioned in a null or not for a given frequency. I spent weeks finding the best place for my sub in my living room at home.

WTF??? I still can't see it no matter what I do, copy/paste, etc... If I could see a pic that would help. Anyone have success with a sub in the spare tire well? That would be pretty trick if someone made a fiberglass kit for that!

With my enclosure I don't have to remove it to access the spare tire; one reason I made it like I did.

Does that 12" of foam that has to come out, have to be permeant? I meam do you have to rip out the foam and then once you do you can never go back? Because if it doesn't you might have your first customer!

That looks sweet

I'm undecided between getting a JL audio W7 or a polk momo, the W7 has a 8" mounting depth, would that fit in that box?

Anyone ever thought of mass producing sub boxes that would fit in our spare tire well out of fiberglass?

That does really look good. Makes me want to finally get around to putting some kind of system on my car.
As for the fiberglass enclosure in the spare tire well, I remember seeing those for the FD several years ago at SoundTrack. It was in some catalog they had full of different hidden enclosures for all different cars. Last time I looked I couldn't find that one again. They must have discontinued it.

I'd be interested in the kit if you're still going to make them.

Sorry about the links guys, glad you figured it out. Removing the foam is not permanent. I sliced it with a knife and removed just the portion from the carpet that sits under the box. You can put it back later no problem and nobody will ever know. The box does not encroach on the spare tire it all; no need to remove the box just to get to your spare.

If 6 people tell me "yeah, I am in for $80 + shipping" I will do it. The parts are all cut on a CNC mill I have here at work, so you can be assured everything will fit perfectly. Assuming you glue it together right

I will provide directions and advice. Should take you only 1-2 hours at the most to assemble.

Email me at bottorff25@aol.com if you want and I can answer questions and forward pics if you still have trouble with the links.

Happy listening.

well it is big but i wanted something good and easy to remove. This is not my daily driver so...

if i would have want something to just have a little bass to improve sound, i would have probably do it the way you did yours. I also wanted something esthetic to do some import shows later in the futur.

by the way, i can remove it in 10 min when i go autoX or drag racing
