wrapping AND coating downpipe?

I'm getting a new exhaust. All new. I am planning on getting a pettit downpipe ceramic coated and then I was gonna wrap it unless someone can convince me that the T304 would crack under these conditions. Fire away.

why coat it? in anycase, id wrap it. yes it might cause rust (the key word here being MIGHT) but by the time it does rust thru, i guarentee you that you will have already blown at least 1 or 2 engines! as far as reducing temps, i would highly suggest against trying to touch a hot ceramic coated dp but with about 8 layers of exhaust wrap, you can touch it with your bare hand no problem i have :p

i can grab my dp while the car is running (after it has warmed up)

after a 3 min hard run up hill, constantly on boost, i can still touch the dp although i must admit, I cant hold on to it like after it has warmed up and is just idling.

you can get it from jegs.com, jcwhitney.com, any performance autoparts store, or the cheapest place i have found, summitracing.com. just look up exhuast wrap in their search function.

as far as the specality metal zipties or what ever they want you to buy, i suggest using worm clamps (they are reusable and cheap and readily availble everywhere)

I think he was making the point that it insulates the rest of the car from the exhaust heat, reducing underhood temps.

And FWIW, if I was installing a new DP I would have it coated AND wrapped, but in my case the DP was already on the car so I just installed the wrap. I partially unwrapped it few months afterward to check the condition of my MS DP and only found a relatively light coating of rust. Nothing that was alarming. As has been said before, I'll be replacing the turbos before the DP goes. They're not that expensive anyway.

some times ya gotta throw caution to the wind

in anycase, i did put a wet cloth to it first to see if it would burn the cloth or not. after taking it off a few times and examining it, it seemed fine to test it with my hand. if i saw the water vaporize instantly and sizzle, i would have known not to touch it but it was just warm/hot so i figured why not. You only live once haha
