Will not go into reverse

I am about to buy an FD which is my first FD although I already have a Turbo FB and A TII drift project. I am about to buy it and it has only one problem.... The car will not physically go into reverse. All the foreward gears shift well it is just reverse. It has a B&M short shifter. Also when i went on the test drive it was with the owners boyfriend and he said she likes to drive in 5th with her hand on the shifter. This sounds to me like she wore the bushings out from that.... Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

its a possibility, thats not really a good practice to have... driving like that. Did it grind while trying to get it into reverse?

Sounds like broken sync in the trans. Happened to me, i couldnt get it in 5th or reverse tho. Ended up needing new clutch, throwoutbearing and syncs.

I agree. When 5th syncro breaks the pieces can block the reverse components.

Definitely broken syncro. Ray Crowe sells newer ones that are a little more durable. If your mechanically inclined you can do it yourself.

Yea i can do trannys.... But it physically will not go into reverse. 5th works fine. Do you think it could possibly be just the bushings or something with the shift fork?

shift fork is also possible.

It's hard to say until you pull off the ext housing.

This happened to me once several years ago. I cured it by getting pissed off after driving onto a curb and slamming it into reverse (I didn't realize what I had done until a few seconds later, but the problem was cured). I guess it just needs a lot of force to get it in. If you're looking at a rebuild anyway, not much to lose.
