wierd coolant leak???

I have a really strange coolant leak on my 3rd gen. It is leaking from between the bellhousing and rear of the engine. I have checked all the usual suspects, hoses, etc., but they all seem fine. I guess there are some freeze plugs in there that could go bad, though I have never seen one do that, but the wierd thing is that it only leaks when the car is runing. After I shut it off it stops leaking even if there is pressure in the cooling system. Any ideas before I pull the tranny?
Thanks,
Cliff

wierd its leaking out of the bell housing??? theres no coolant that really runs through there, is it just dripping off the bell housing or did you remove the dust cover and see it leaking?
its pretty solid back there

check the coolant lines off of the tb, mabe one has a pinhole and is leaking on the bell housing....

Yeah, I was hoping it was that hose from the TB, but no such luck. I just had the engine rebuilt so I replaced all the hoses. I guess freeze plugs are not normally changed with a standard rebuild on a rotary? It is dripping right out of where the bellhousing and the block meet together. In a V8 I would not think twice, I would know it was a freeze plug, but I have never seen one go bad on a rotary. Those are freeze plugs on the rear housing right?
Thanks,
Cliff

coolant leak

I have the same problem on my 13b just had a rebuild only 7000 on eng what it is doing is shooting coolant out where the eng meets the bell housing right at the top it only happens when I give it gas if the rpms hit 2500 it starts to spray out the higher the rpms the harder it sprays I had a post up at the 2 gen site but no help kind of a rare problem I also sent a email to atkins so if I find out I will send it to you .

Hey dude, I just found my leak! I pulled my tranny after ordering some freeze plugs and you will not believe what I found! Now this engine was just rebuilt and ported less that 1,000 miles ago... the torsion bolts, the ones that hold the engine together, were all loose! One had backed itself out about 1/4 inch and the coolant was leaking out of the bolt hole! I went around and retorqued all the bolts and they were all loose! I don't know how this thing even ran. I called the shop that I had it rebuilt at and they say that it happens... I don't want to name names, but all of them were loose... not one or two. Hmmmm. I will pray tonight to the rotary God that everything else is going to be ok. So far the only thing I can say is that it idles much better and its not leaking any coolant.

Loose tension bolts don't just happen. That is pure bullshit. It takes a bit of time and patience to torque then down properly. Ask anyone who has built their own engine. Then we retorque them the next day. That company did not correctly do it.

So now they are torqued and the thing is not leaking anymore coolant but I do still have a oil leak. It looks like the pan gasket but I was not really paying much attention to it because the coolant was leaking so bad.
The car seems to run fine, is there anything I should look for? They were all at least a full turn loose, some more than others, also the housing for the rear main seal was loose. I figured the guy put it all together and got sidetracked or something and just plain forgot. I saw the porting before it went together and it looked real nice, of course all of that preperation means nothing if you don't finish the job.
What should I do now? As soon as I saw what it was i called them right away. They did not offer to help or promise they would stand behind the work or try to reassure me, just tried to make me believe that they torqued them and this happens on 3rd gen motors. I took it to them because I heard so many bad things about Mazda remans.... live and learn.
Thanks,
Cliff

Angry Please name names!

I live in Santa Clarita and we may be using the same shop. If there's trouble, I'd rather you say who worked on your car.

I JUST had my primary fuel injectors and pulsation damper replaced, and silicon hoses installed by TriPoint Engineering. They also gave the car a full inspection. I've driven the car exactly 200 miles since then and NOW (Today!!!!) my low coolant light came on and I apparently have a MAJOR coolant leak. From the radiator back the whole underside of my car is covered with the stuff. I'm no mechanic, so I can't really diagnose the problem. I'm taking the car back to Tripoint to see what's up. Maybe they screwed something up??? Maybe **** happens??? Either way, it's too freaking coincidental.
