why precats clog

what causes the precat to get clogged? driving style? and is there a way to tell if it is? i don't feel any heat coming into the cabin. i would get a dp but budget is saying no. btw, the car has 100k, so is it just a matter of time before the precat gets clogged (if it's not already).

Over time heat can deteriorate the substrate in the pre-cat. These pieces may come loose and obstruct exhaust flow in the pre-cat or possibly farther downstream in the exhaust system. I wouldn't assume your system is already clogged. When it is, you'll usually see a sign such as a drop in performance or excessive heat.

A DP is only a couple hundred bux, so I'd say to save up your money for it. It's an excellent first mod in that it helps to reduce all the underhood heat. If you're still on your first engine at 100k, putting the DP in now isn't going to really help lengthen it's life, but when you do get your new motor, you'll be saving it's life some by keeping the heat in there down.
