Who has pressed in diff mounts themselves?

I need to replace my differential mounts, because I noticed that they are leaking fluid. I wanna go with Pettit's urethane dif mounts for the rear, and I was thinking about pressing them in myself. I know how to do the bolt/washer method+blow torch to remove the old bushings. I know when I replaced my toe links and trailing arms, they had metal sleeves and for that reason I had to have a shop press them out, because no tool I had would press those steel sleeves out.

Has anyone ever pressed in urethane dif mounts themselves and if so, do they have the steel sleeves as well?

I did mine myself maybe about a month ago. Not too hard, considering it was my first time ever doing any sort of bushings. The stock mounts do have the steel sleeves in them so you will need a press, for taking the old ones out, and pressing the new ones in, no substitutes.

I had a spare diff "arm" and just took it to a shop to get the old bushings pressed out. With those out, the new ones basically pop in with a hammer, very easy.

If you can get your hands on a spare arm or can afford to put your car down for a day or so, that's the way to do it. Just take the arm to a machine shop, they'll have the old ones pressed out in no time flat for a nominal fee.

Oh yeah, be sure to lube the CRAP out of the new bushings before you press them in. They go in much nicer

A very experienced machinist said to use a SOAP-based lubricant (he uses Palmolive "green" dishwashing soap) instead of grease or oil to minimize damage to the bushing from petroleum distillates. Hylomar works great too!

I used whatever lubricant came with my Powerflex Urethane Bushings, I believe it is also to prevent too much squeaking over time.

I too have also heard that soap-based lubricants are very good for pressing in polyurethane bushings

I local machine shop did mine for $15.00 I believe. You can also go rent the bearing removal tools from Advance Auto. Those tools are what I used when I did my pillow ball bushings.

I did mine last month. My dad manages a John Deere Implement, so he had a 50ton press at his disposal. Easy as pie.

I was afraid that it'd have the metal sleeve in there. My local machine shop wants to charge $25-50 per bushing to remove it, I may have to check somewhere else

i redid all my bushings... i borrowed my friends 10ton press and didnt cut it for all of them.. then the shop wanted to charge me like 250 to remove like 4 bushings so i said f it and just bought a 20ton press for 200...

ernesto- thats friggen ridiculous... worst comes to worst u can ship em to me and ill pop em out for you.. just pay shipping.... only thing is i live in NJ lol..

That's way too much for just those bushings. They're easy as pie to press out, literally takes about 1 minute. Go somewhere else
