I am sorry my words "harder" should have been "thicker". I also see now that "power" should have been "torque".

Now Rynberg please tell me what other statement was "BS"?

Mazda makes up to 5 or 7 mm apex seals I cannot remember.
Mazda has only used 2 and 3-mm apex seals.

This is why most of the Pacific side tuners with experience stick with the 2mm size.
Any proof of that statement? My builder is Rick of Rick's Rotary -- this guy is a perfectionist and builds great motors -- he strongly recommends 3mm seals for performance rebuilds. I posted some info about another motor that was in his shop when I was there with 3mm seals in my engine rebuild thread. Just wondering where you got your info to make such a blanket statement?

So do you consider viton soft seals an upgrade, or would you still stick with the OEM mazda? I can really see this being the only area of improvement over the OEM mazda set, due to the much higher heat tolerances of viton vs. regular rubber seals.

A qoute from the atkins FAQ section:

Question 53. "What are the difference between you're oil rings and Mazda's oil rings?

Answer "Ours are solid Viton, so it can handle higher temps while Mazda's is a silicone base with a Viton coating".

Other than hearing good things on the forum and grape vine this is what I based my opinon on.

I will reply to you when I get my hands on a friends book "Rotary Engine Illustrated" by the director of Mazda's Rotary Program, I forget his name Japanese dude.

Also about the Apex seals I am 100% sure that Mazda made 5mm seals, never for 13b applications but I am sure they made 5mm seals.

The info for the japanese builders I can't remember where it comes from, magazine or email from Inukai. So for now I will say I am sorry to anyone who I have mislead and will call this statement B.S, sorry about that one.

rynberg and dradon03 u are both wrong as far as a mazda production rotary goes in 1967-1973 a 6mm pyro-graphite high strength carbon compound seal was used and rynberg follow ur own advice before corecting others""Dude, you should check up before you post BS like that....seriously. Some newb might actually believe what you posted.... Proof read Chart published by Mazda on the history of the apex seal. http://www.rotaryeng.net/seals.html
"Rotary Engine Illustrated"was by Kenichi Yamamoto and there was 2 versions of it ,,143 pages (or 65 pages depending on version)of every thing u wanted and didnt want to know about rotary's!

I tried finding that text, as stated before I called my own BS cause I couldn't back up my statements but I was sure about the apex sizing. Thanks for clearing that up.

In the context of modern rotaries, Mazda only makes 2 and 3-mm apex seals. In the 13B engine specifically, WHICH IS THE ENGINE UNDER DISCUSSION NOT THE 10A, they have only used 2 and 3-mm seals. Mazda hasn't made that 6mm seal for over 30 years. I stand by my earlier post.

That A.O.K with me, since it was ambiguous that the 13b was the engine that we were discussing rather than "Apex seals" in general. I only thought that you would have thought of the 13b only after I wrote my post. So lets finish by saying I am sorry for any confusion I could have caused and possible B.S spread - End of thread..
