whining noise...

Hey guys

I tried swapping my air pump yesterday (different complication there), but after I put everything back together... I noticed a rather LARGE whining noise. I presume its was from the drive belt (since thats the one I was adjusting), but it sounded really bad. The car itself started fine, and seemed to idle ok, but the sound got rather LOUD, and I had to shut the car down. The first couple of seconds when I first started the engine up, there was no sound... but the 2nd time... the sound started right away. I rechecked the belt to make sure it was seated correctly, and as far as I could tell, everything seemed fine. Could it be that the belt is too tight or loose? could that cause the belt to whine like that? I didn't have the car running for more than a few secnods as the whining was almost unbearable.

Thank you in advance for any feedback.
