whether to fix or sell the fd..

so i've been contemplating this for a while.

i'm not sure where to go with my car.

i bought my fd about 3 years ago. it was stock, the dealership screwed me and 2 months after i got my car the clutch, tranny, and apex seals went out along with the turbo's.

took my car to pettit they rebuilt it, got a streetported motor with 3mm seals, intake, intercooler, radiator, tranny, clutch, dp, hi flo cat, apexi n1 tit. exhaust and 99 spec twins. buddy club d1 spec coilovers and fuel pump

cost me a hefty amount with all the labor it was close to 10k. i bought the car for 15 about.

that was my first mistake was fixing it.

now the car is missing a bumper (it was so low my car ate the bumper when i hit a pothole), its completely gutted other than the dash, headliner and seats, still have all the interior minus the carpet in my garage. and its painted flat black to due to the awful paint job the dealship got the car at maaco all the clear was gone after a year

i owe 6k left on the car,

if i sell it now i could probably get what i owe on the car, not too many miles on the motor or all the other parts. maybe 20k.

to fix it up i'd need a bumper, new hatch (rust in mine), paint, the interior put back in new door handles and some bushings and pillow ***** for the rear. after all that the car would look good and run perfect.

i have alot of money invested into this car and its one of those things where you wake up look at it and facepalm.

wondering if you guys where in this situation if you'd just sell it as it is, or try to spend a little extra money to get it to the 12k-15k region if i decide to sell it or possibly keep it

Sounds to me like you're almost there. You've done most of the work but you want to give up when your so close?

If I was you I would fix it, paint it, and enjoy the ride.

i totally hear you half the people i know say that, the other half say either sell it or burn it haha.

i put so much money into this thing and now its kinda to the point where the cash flow is a lot tighter, parts come more rare, and the things i need are a bit expensive.

to get the car done it'd probably take to the end of this year probably longer. so who knows.

the car got beat to hell from all the drifting i did, i stopped caring about how it looked and gutted it, which i'm now regretting lol.

thanks for the input man and any other would be appreciated

Talking about money lost you have no idea how much you will loose when you try to sell it. The fact that it has no paint, and is gutted with throw off the price completely. Whether you are keeping it or selling it you still need to finish it.

I say pay off what you owe first. Then slowly work on finishing it. After that, sell it if it doesn't make you as happy as you thought you'd be.

I would bail. The car sounds like a basketcase that you never should have bought, and this isn't a good time to be spending so much of your money on something like that.

I say keep it and make it what you wanted it to be when you bought it.

I bought my first fd back in november of last year. Now when i baught it, it was a excellent deal. It was a 93 touring rx7 85K manual of course. All original and very clean inside and out. Plus it came with a warranty! 3 years 36K and covered seals and gaskets, engine, and drive train. The guy seemed really nice said his name was "Ace" and seemed to be giving me a good deal (13K) for the car. But starting at about 500 miles later i had boost leaks, tranny problems, and the turbos started to smoke, need a new clutch, new hose job and i have to wait till i get back from deployment now to do it all. So my car is sitting pretty still at the moment untill i get the vacuum line job done. But i do plan on getting a engine rebuild, going single on the turbos, getting a intercooler and all that stuff.... Basically alot of money to be put in the car but for me its worth it because its what i makes me happy and thats what its all about... PS that guy was a **** bag and wont return my emails, he sells other rx-7's and high dollar cars like bmw's vipers etc... you know what im going to make a thread about this dudes place....

I say do NOT sell it. the reason why is... do you really think you're gonna gets whats its worth in this kind of economy? The car in the condition that it is now, might be worth $20K+, but you probably wont get anywhere near that much for it. Maby about $15K. You might actually end up selling it for less then you initially paid for the car. I say if you DO still enjoy the car, then i'd say fix it and keep it. I can understand its frustrating to have to keep fixing the car, Ive been there

yeah i'd love to keep the car thats what i've been trying to convince myself the past year. but it seems like by fixing it i'm just dumping more money into it and more and more and more and then when it comes time to sell it i'll just lose alot more out of the deal then i would now.

but i'll put the car on probation and keep it for a bit and slowly make some progress and see how it goes

Those idiots have used about 10 different names in the last 4 years, they constantly lie about mileage, condition, warranties and anything to get the sale. They used to post some pretty decent deals back in the day but when I called about the cars they were clueless and made up obvious lies. They have screwed over several people in teh bimmer community as well.

To the OP, if you want to get hte most money out of the car you need to sell it as a roller for $5k and sell the drivetrain(engine, trans, etc) radiator, fans, full exhaust and any mods and you could probably get another $3k for the car.

A flat black, no interior fd without a bumper probalby wouldnt bring more than $5-6k running at this time.
