The short blocks are the same. The power differences are not from the engine, but a few components around the engine and a higher stock boost setting.

As Mahjik said the engines are identical inside. People are also going to come in here and call you a racist for using "Jap", just figured I would prepare you for that.

You would be better off getting a rebuild from a reputable shop then buying a used J-spec engine. There are about 10,000 horror stories out there surrounding "good" J-spec blocks. Just tore one down last week that was "good" Good other than the fact 2 of the rear seals on one housing was blown eating the rotor and housing along with shooting the broken seal over into the other housing damaging it also.

Imported engines are notorious for problems. Dunno if it's improper storage, abuse right before the PO removes them, or what, but they are. And as said inside they're the same. I think you'd want to get the Japanese ECU, exhaust, etc. if anything, or better yet tune it yourself and buy an aftermarket exhaust.

I thought about doing the same thing as you as well. I wanted the newer components with the simpler hoses for the turbos. I think Dan did this. I remember him saying that its much simpler and easier to work with.
