Question Where's the VIN#

On a 3rd generation, what's the location of all VIN#s, especially on the engine.

One on the tag on the dash and one punched into the top middle of the firewall.

I don't know of one on the motor.

The VIN and the number on the engine will not match. However, you can get a warranty print out from the dealer which should have the original engine number on it, which you can match up. The number I believe is stamped on the water pump housing.

the OE engines have a serial # stamped on one of the (rear iirc) housings - the chassis VIN is stamped on the firewall and on a tag on the dash on the drivers side (by law it must be visible through the windsheild). it is also repeated on the drivers Door jamb (Tire/Safety info sticker) along w/ the Build date and may be on the Emissions info/ hose diagram sticker on the hood.

From a Collectors standpoint for Import cars it is unimportant if the #s match as most foreign car makers did not keep track of what engine serial # was in which chassis untill quite receintly.

Unless the car had Warranty work performed on it and that data was entered into the warranty system (very likely ) , MAZDA NA probably will not be able to give you that info, Mazda Japan might have those records But would prob be hard to get.

Called Mazda, they gave me the name of the original dealership. Called dealership, very nice tech guy told me that the only problem ever was that it stalled when cold, which he said was fixed by installing a new throttle body, under warranty. They were unable to give me the serial (engine) numbers, like MAXPESCE hoped above, said they just didn't keep record. Japan is too far to go for this info, so will go with the belief that it's the original engine. Thanks for the input though, this website has been nothin but helpful. I hope to hit a show or two this summer. Anyone hear about the Carlisle fiasco, all future shows cancelled on the sports compact car venue!!

I could never find a number on my original engine. The Mazda remanufactured ones do have a metal tag with a number on it, or at least mine did.

Reply w/quote: see DAVIDR message

Where was it located, and do you know what it was, maybe there's some sort of standard code to look for that would help me out.
