Hi guys need to find some 12mm power steering hose, and I cant find a place local or online that will supply metric hose that is compatible.

I would use a standard equivalent, but this just does not work, as the hose is fiber reinforced, and no sizes seem to be compatible.

Any suggestions or sources?

If I canot locate a source, I guess I will just have to get a 2nd stock line and barb fitting it together. Though I would much rather just be able to source the correct tubing for my little project.


Why is this such a problem to get metric “bulk” tubing anywhere?
I can get English sizes in any shape type grade or color ect. I want, but no metric, what gives?

Have you tried Grainger's or another industrial supply company? How about you local John Deere dealer or another implement dealer? Shoot...we have about 6 auto shops that custom make ANY hydraulic hose around here, as there as so many farmers that are constantly blowing hoses. Check companies like Gates also.

have you physicaly bought metric ps hose from any of these sources?

 

I used a 1/2" hose.

I couldn't find any other size (especially metric)

 

Do you have the appropriate tools to make the high pressure fittings for the hose?

(I ask because PS runs at very high pressure and the fittings don't look like they were put together with any old tool)

So was I. I guess I should have made that abundantly clear instead of assuming everyone knew the return line was 12mm

It is the return hose that I am asking about.i have no idea what the ID of the pressure side is

I know exactly where I could get a pressure side made if I needed one, though it would be a lame way since there are new and used available….


I still cannot find anyone willing to sell me standard power steering compatible hose that is 12mm in custom lengths.

Like I said I would use a standard equivalent but the strand reinforcement seems to be a limiting factor as the stuff just does not want to stretch far enough without failing structurally and the 1/2" is a little too large.

 

I know I have looked for it more than once, I guess they just assume the only people that works on cars and mod them are the good ol' boys that only use ye old English measurements?

 

1/2 is equiv. to 12.7mm. does the .7 make that much of a difference?

 

It did not for me. I also used 2 clamps on each side just in case. Holding up well so far. I think I bought 2' and slid it far down over the hard line.

I don’t particularly care to pull up to a friends or acquaintance and pull away with small drips or a puddle of fluid left behind for someone else to clean.

The way I had it before was to actually convert with barb fittings from metric to imperial or english, but I would really like to find a place that will sell 12mm hose or any metric hose for that matter.

The question was not can I make a 1/2'”~12.7mm hose fit a 12mm fitting; it was simply a question “Where can I get 12mm power steering hose”

I called my local “big” hose and fittings distributors and no one could tell me how to procure 12 mm hose?
I also got ahold of a few guys that said they would look into it and get back to me, but you know how that goes….

I haven’t been looking hard as of late but will this weekend when I have some time.

If anyone has found a seller that they have purchased from please post a source.

Any help from someone that has ran into this problem and found a distributor would be very helpful.

7/16 hose is ~11.1 mm.

 

wow, I know this thread is old but since I make a ps kit with my vm's I'll shed light on hose sizes I use.

The hose connected to the resivior is 12mm / 8AN / 1/2 or what ever you want to call it. I actually use a 12mm hose with parts number "53431". I attach this hose to an 8an barb with a -8an to -6an reducer to the ps cooler. The ps cooler has -6an fittings. Here is the other thing you need to know. The low pressure side has two size hoses that attach to the s-ps cooler line. So the other side _ have a -6an to 3/8 barb. On the 3/8 barb a 9.5mm hose is really tight but doable. This will go to the lower ps line near the rack. This 9.5mm hose has part number "70416". It will be better using a 10mm hose for this lower line. Just go to carpartsdiscount and type in those part numbers to find your hoses. They will work.

For the fear of sounding like I don't know what I am talking about, but why in the world would I need ANOTHER cooling surface in my engine bay? Is cooling the power steering fluid that important that this type of modification would improve performance???

No worries bro, I'll explain why youd need another one inmy application, its a replacement.

The pics I posted are of the ps cooler upgrade that comes with my vmount kits. When you go vmount is pushes the ps line very low and interfers with putting on the lower panel. With my kit you ditch the long cooling "s" line and replace it with a ps cooler. Also in drifiting, back canyon roads and autox youll be using the steering quite a bit so the cooler is there to help keep the temps cooler.

It does not really improve performance per say, but it prevents the ps bearing from getting too hot during extended spirited driving on windy roads. Its for protection. Same thing as a larger radiator and oil cooler, it keeps temps in check so parts dont fail.

The lower ps hose that's close to a 10mm and fits good is a gates 361960.
