where is the 2nd oil cooler on an R1?

hi guys

still slowly going over my recently bought 1992 built japanese model FD

i read that the R1 had dual oil coolers

mine has what looks like dual oil coolers, one behind each opening under the headlights

if these aren't the oil coolers what are they?

it has all the other R1 bits but i thought they may have been added later as the seller didn't seem to know much about the car he bought in some deal

-red rx7 tower bar
-all the spoilers

and what i was told was tein suspension looks to be KYB dampers, perhaps using the the stock R1 springs, certainly wouldn't want it any stiffer for the street

the oil coolers are located in the openings on the far sides of the front bumper just above the brake ducting as you described. If there is one on each side then you have dual oil coolers. If it is an R1 it should have the suede interior, no sunroof, no bose stereo, tower bar, dual oil coolers, front chin spoiler with brake ducting, and no cruise control if it is a US R1. Hope this helps.

Just as a clarification so that people dont misinterpret the above (and of course, there are no auto R1s):

If it's an auto-tranny model, the passenger side (for US models) cooler is a tranny cooler, while the driver side cooler is the engine oil cooler. Not sure how this relates to J-spec auto cars though.

The springs are the same for all models from a given year, also. There are no R-model-specific springs. Only the shocks were different, and most have been replaced already, as it sounds like yours have been.

The rear springs are the same on all models. The 94/95 had different front springs on the R1. The 94/95 R1 uses FD17-34-011, while the other models use FD01-34-011.

If you really want to make sure that they did not just replace the springs, put in the R1 oil cooler and brake ducts (and replace the seats), try looking up the # on the rear trailing arm. The R1/R2 use FD16-28-50X while the others use FD15-28-50X. Anyone know if this is stamped on the arm? I can't imagine anyone with a base or touring upgrading to the R1/R2 part due to the price.

Also a real R1/R2 will have a factory rear spoiler which is a different part number that the dealer installed part. The factory part is FD03-51-960C-PT (white) while the dealer installed is FD01-V4-920G. Again, I'm not sure if you can see this part number (at least without taking the spoiler off).

I would imagine that Japanese-spec FD's might not have exactly the same equippement-packages that US-spec's have..
I have a Euro-spec FD, it features:
-full R1 suspension
-Rear spoiler
-Front lip
-Red strut bar
-Two oilcoolers
-Sunroof
-Cruise control
-Breake ducts

love these forums

thanks guys

will be jacking up the car and looking at the rear trailing arm......though i'm not quite sure where it is...front or rear???will also get on to my japanese friends and try and find out more about what the R1 spec here was

apparently here in japan the R1 is considered one of the best versions...though as an australian i would be interested in a "bathurst" model...which i think was the sports model after the R2???

whatever, the detailed info like the trailing arm and rear wing numbers is exactly the stuff i'm looking for

of interest, yesterday i kneeled down and peered into the intakes of the 2 japanese rx7s i saw and both had dual coolers, 1 wasn't an auto, the other i forgot to check...

eric e

wanted to take it for a spin today but almost a foot of snow in 3 hours was enough to ensure that without snowtyres it would have been really been a spin, snuck out for a little drive while it was snowing a couple of weeks ago and driving a light performance car with FAT tyres on slippery roads is trickier than putting about inth my little non-turbo 4WD 660cc mini-car

Actually to tell you the truth.

IN JAPAN

There is no R1..... No R2 They dont go by that, as the states did.

Also in a 92, you have small front rotors, along with FC front brakes. They didnt change them till 93 when they found out they were crap. I would talk to Mazda to see if they did do a recall.

Bathurst isnt really special, it was just last of the regular RX7s, but wasnt all pristen as the SPIRIT R was.

All FDs in Japan have dual oil coolers. No tranny cooler. You can get an Auto, but leather and sun roofs are hard to find. They stopped making the sunroof in Japan in 95 due to the tests that it was in fact weaking the body

GOOD INFO FROM ROTARY TT by the way

Also from Dclin- but he is in Japan man...

plot thickens...

ok thanks for that SprintR and others

will compare front rotors and calipers with a friends 94 auto model

these international forums are great but it looks like you really have to do your homework before jumping to any conclusions about model spec. between cars from different countries

not speaking much japanese and reading less means it's easier for me to learn about the cars from you guys than locally, but it's a great learning experiance anyway

eric e

used kazaa lite file sharing network to do a search on rx7 and came up with a amazing 3minute burnout by an 1st gen until the motor pops....in the background is an ad for a pukekohe company, my howetown, so either meremere drag track or the pukekohe race track

couldn't find any numbers on any suspension arms but didn't have a real good look...

did find the rear spoiler number was visible if you peered under the wing, mine has FD 0351 960 ABS, moulded into it, so it looks like a factory fitted item...apparently the 3 japanes models in 1992 were S, R and X, got a japanese friend working on the spec levels for me
