When will the price drop??

I've been looking rx-7's for years and the price on them just doesn't seem to be going down. What's the deal? I mean for a decent one you are going to have to pay 13-15k. Thats alot for a car that is 11 years old and has a ton of problems can anyone explain why they aren't dropping in price?

From what I've seen they ARE dropping in price. It used to be hopeless to find a decent FD for under $17K.

Prices usually will drop a year or 2 after a new model comes out. The rx8 doesn't count for us in the rx7 community as a new model but who know what the market will do. Its been 2 years now (I think) so maybe soon.

I just won't pay more than 10 for one and that is one thats ragged out so Im not going to do that. I guess I'll keep waiting because im going to redo everything on it if I ever get one.

supply and demand man...
The FD is still a very desireable car. The numbers of actual fd's in the states are dwindling and a lot of us are just far to financially and emotionally invested in our cars to part with them

All the japanese sports cars from that time, like NSX, FD, Supra, are all holding steady at their current value. I don't think the prices will be dropping significantly anytime soon either. As they get harder to find, especially in good condition, people are willing to pay more for them. I just paid 19k for a mint CYM, and I think the price was very fair. Blue book values don't really mean anything to the Japanese sports cars of the early 90's...

Usually, you get what you pay for. For 10K, you won't get a nice car unless you find a steal, which is unlikely. Waiting means that the car you buy will only be older when you get it, and even more likely to need repairs.

If you are going to re-do everything anyway, why not get one that is cheap now?

How long are you going to wait for? Five years? Ten? Prices for clean low mileage FDs have not really budged in the past few years (though some ratty ones can now be had for $10k or even slightly less). Clean RX-7s are rare enough to begin with and are getting rarer by the month. My guess is that a clean FD with ~50k miles that would currently sell for $15k or so is probably going to sell for about the same amount in five years because it will be ever rarer then.

If you are going to redo everything, why not just buy one with a blown motor for $8k or so?

true. blue book is a record of auction sales and i would be surprised if more than a handful of nice fd's ever go through the line at an auction. you just cant rely on bb value for unique cars.

The price has dropped somewhat

The FD is holding its value because of supply and demand. A lot of people like these cars, and there are not always a lot for sale...

The cost/ value of a car like the FD is determined at the time of transaction. There are so few transactions to make a valid general value statement. Anyone buying an FD should know even a low mileage car is 12 years old and needs work. All the rubber hoses should be replaced along with all suspension components that have rubber elements. Of course the paint will be faded after 12 years, look closely.

The FD will bounce around 12-17 K for awhile longer. The demand will fade. It is nothing like the Porsche 911 which is still in production with a '95 still commanding 40-50K. Of course a new Porsche which looks alot like an old Porsche costs 80-100K.

I suppose, but a rebuild at 119k makes it nice that I don't have to deal with that at the moment

I disagree. My 94 has 55K. Most of the original vacuum hoses are in good shape. I have only had to replace a couple of pillow bearings, and the paint looks like new ( I have looked very closely)

There are plenty of low mileage FDs out there that are in excellent condition ..... like mine

Frankly, I think you are fooling yourself if you think FDs will go down in price.

With the sub 15K amount sold here, and the probably sub 10K amount alive, they
won't be getting cheaper.

****, I personally think the market has fallen off considerably this winter, more so than in previous years. Right now it's almost impossible to get your investment back out of a car if you were to try and sell, much less make any money. It'll come back up a bit in spring and summer, but I think overall about 10-15% price drop in both cars and parts has occured this last year for some reason...just what I'm seeing, and I deal with/around these on a daily basis.

You can never really get your money back out of parts in the car. You need to sell those off alone and sell the car as stock or close to. I doubt they'll drop much, if they do I'll run out and buy an extra as a daily driver for summer.

You said it, champ. Look what they go for w/ a blown engine, bad paint, and an idiot box transmission:
