Sorry, this isn't a thread for everyone to post engine pictures. If you read the beginning of the thread, this was to document my project as I had gotten several PM's of the years asking "My engine is blown, what would you do in my situation". So this thread was created to explain what I would, as I was doing it.

I know that was a drive well waited on!! good work tackling the gremlins...on the clutch note: Why would you have to adjust the clutch [I assume the rod on the pedal] for just a new clutch?

I'm using a 6-puck sprung on the car now. I need the engagement point on this clutch to be higher than the Street/Strip clutch (at least for me). Since it's more of an on/off type engagement, it's engaging low which is a tad bit of a pain for me.

 

Well, typically, no news is good news. However, not in this case.

The engine is done, as in it has to come back out. Last weekend, I had the car up on jackstands fixing the last remaining drips of fluids. While the car was idling, it backfired once or twice which it hadn't done before. I revved the engine up to 2500 rpms and it let out a huge bang and that was all she wrote.

What happened? I have no idea at this point. I'll be pulling the engine next week to check the damage. I'll let you know what I find out when I get there.

Disappointed? Yes. Frustrated? Not really as it's it what it is. It doesn't do me any good to be mad at this point as that won't change anything. I need to figure out, if I can, what happened and see what the damage is.

It does make my S/C'd NSX track car idea sound more appealing though.

Well, my take on it is that I have no one to blame but myself. It is definitely disappointing, no doubt about it. Depending on the issue/damage will determine my next steps.

Obviously, if I cannot determined what happened and why, it might not make sense to do the assembly again myself as I won't be able to guarantee that I "fixed" anything. So, I'll have to try to assess what I have first and then go from there.

I'm making arrangements to get a hoist and engine stand borrowed again so I should hopefully know more by the end of next week.

Sorry to here this Mahjik :-( I have been following all your hard work and with great anticipation. I waited for day you would start it up. Man you did everything right. You didn't rush, took your time, checked and rechecked, and did your home work. Man what a disappointment. Well, I had a time with mine, but you still had to out do me. Best of luck, I will be tuning in. Blood, sweat, and freaking mental duress. That’s what owning a seven can do to you.

there would have to be some sort of ignition/fueling issue to blow an engine at that RPM. especially since it wasn't even under load.

 

Just running the engine at all can do it if everything not 'right'.

I believe it was an assembly error. While the car was starting and running, I had some seal which was sticking. I could tell as the vacuum would get stronger as the engine ran longer. I was just hoping to drive it more and have it seat in, but apparently there was a little more going on that just something that simple. It was worth a shot (not literally).

You know, I said it before: Sometimes, you don't know you are doing something wrong until it's done. So, I'll tear it down and see if I can find out what caused the problem and hopefully learn from the mistake.

I've just sat here for the past 45 minutes reading this entire post and I have to say hats off to you my friend. This thing (post) is almost like watching a movie with an ending where you just know they're going to make a sequel. Solid effort and great attitude. Please stick with it and keep educating us. Maybe we can title the next post "Mahjik's RX7- Return of the engine hoist".

 

^Me too, just found this thread for the first time. And I thought my 3 year 20B conversion odyssey was crazy! Keep with it. The thread is excellent knowledge for FD owners.

Get the car back on the road. The M3's nice but it's no FD

My sympathies. Don't give up. I've been working on my engine "rebuild" for over 12 months now and one of the things that keeps me going is having read your build in this thread.

How much money do you expect to spend on the re-build?

 

Thanks guys. I got everything drained and the engine is ready to be pulled. As soon as I can borrow the hoist, it'll get it yanked out. I'm not in a rush this week as we have heat indexes up around 105F+.

I don't know yet. Once I crack it open, I'll be able to estimate a little more. The absolute worst case would be that I just buy a Mazda remanufactured engine which would run about $2700. The downside is that all of the 'cool' things I wanted to use wouldn't be there. So basically, that's going to be about my upper limit for fixing this engine. If it's going to cost me more than $2700, I'll probably just buy a reman but I don't think it will come down to that (at least not yet).

BAAAHHH! Crap, dude I was hoping you'd be ready to run in October again. Eric keeps asking when you'll be back out there. Sucks. Oh well, as you say "it is what it is". Keep me updated, and let me know if you need a hand with anything.

Thanks Art. I was on track to make it to the October event until this. I'll 'git er done' one way or another.

This is why I suggest to everyone that if you don't want to run the risk of doing it twice, let a professional do it. Right now, I have the time to do it again. Its the patience I'm running out of which is the problem.
