Its for emisisons. It pumps air into the catalyctic converter at engine speeds under 3000 rpm to help burn off polutants. The car should still run without it, but with stock ecu it might idle rough.

It provides combustable air to the cat to help burn up any unburned hydrocarbons left in the exhaust after it leaves the engine. repeat, after it leaves. it is of no value to any internal combustion engine except to make emissions cleaner. It requires hp to drive it so thats why anyone who does"nt need to pass emmisions gets rid of it

You don't need unless if it's necessary for smog as others have mentioned. Since you don't have a main cat, you can just remove it and install a Greddy pulley kit which includes a shorter belt.

Without the airpump the stock cat will overheat and eventually clog, and can pose a fire hazard. You have a console "overheat" light just for this purpose. If you remove the smog pump, replace the cat with a mid-pipe.

Find another mechanic. He does not know what he is talking about. If you do not have a catalytic converter, then the air pump is not necessary. I have driven around on a stock ecu with the airpump, ACV, solenoid rack off the car (resistors in the solenoid connectors) and the stock ecu didn't mind one bit.

Why don't you tell us what kind of probelms your car is having and we'll tell you what to look for.

well the thing is that i got stationed in montana (lots of nothing up here) and there is no one up here that knows anything about rx's... this guy worked for the dealer and had an rx back in the day... so he only know how to do stock stuff... the only thing i really want him to do is to do all the vac hoses... plus my fpr is leaking... but hes all i got... im just gonna tell him to leave it off and see if he can do the rest of the job... since he dont know much about mods. and hopefuly get the p/s removed... argghhh this sux.. if only i was in florida again

Post in your local forum and ask for shop recommendations or to see if you can hook up with a local rotor head for help. I'd offer to pay him or at least lots of Beer!

Well not entirely... and I don't mean to pick on you specifically Batmobile...

If it's a California ECU / Car... the Smog pump also pumps air / exhaust through the EGR and therefore leans out the mixture, without it it will idle rough, and can fowl up your plugs.... and cause other hard to track down things .....

If you have a Power FC of course that is all mute... since the PFC doesn't even know what an EGR is, since it only existed on California Cars....
