When I just had my motor replaced, KDR recommended dino oil for the first 2000 miles, but had no weight recommendation. I don't think it really matters all that much. Especially where you're in Cali, weather stays pretty much the same in the your break in period. I used 10W30, because that was what I had. And you never know it New England, it could be 30 tomorrow. 20W50 is probably fine, 10W40, 10W50, whatever. Just pick one.

Mazda recommends 10w30. Stick with that.

and mazda is correct, but if you have oil mods....a heavier (20w50) oil will do in synthetic form....

it will boost your oil pressure on a modded motor

Exclamation

I don't remember off hand but I don't think the car takes 5 quarts... maybe 3.75 or something like that.

Can anyone confirm?

Yes depending on R model or not. From 3 3/4 to 4 1/4 quarts.

I used 10w30 when I first installed the engine and switch to 15w40 for my first oil change, I'd suggest to drain the oil cooler(s) too.

Whoops, I meant 4, not 5... I incited an "oil capacity" shoot-out. Sorry fellas.
