Yeah... cute isn't the best word. One GF used to say it was such a boy car. She didn't say it in a bad way, nor a good way but that's way better than cute!
The best is when someone asks what it is, and then they say well whats so special about. I get this from girl friends the most.
Having to explain a rotary, when they don't even get how a normal engine works, or why a rotary is any different haha.

People are so damn clueless about cars nowadays!! like wat the hell... But yeah I used to get mine mistaken for all sorts of cars all the damn time. It's pretty funny really. LOL corvette, I get viper all the time, porsche... most people don't know what the hell car it is.
It's been 2 years since I drove my FD so I can't even remember anymore, but I used to get all sorts of **** all the time! lmao pretty amusing.

I have a NB miata and a FD. I get the cute comments in the Miata and more stares than comments in the FD. I've found people follow me and take photos which sorta freaks me out. I didn't think about the attention an FD draws when I purchased it.
If you park the NB and FD side by side, you see the FD lines definitely influence the shape of the NB, so I can see where someone would mistake the two with limited car knowledge.

The prior owner of my car worked for Nike. He had a Nike swoosh parking sticker on the windshield. Once someone asked me what the car was. I pointed to the sticker, and told them it was a Nike. I think they actually believed me for a moment, then I told them the truth.

guy at drive through just asked me what the car was , not 15 minutes ago LOL
I had an NB , before my FD , one of the main reasons I bought the NB was because of the similarities between the FD , and it .. When I had a hardtop on it that is LOL
I loved my NB no doubt its an awesome car. But I dont think the photocopy was ever going to be the real thing specially now that I own the FD .
As for the attention part .... YEAH I'm not much of a LOOK AT ME kind of person . and hte FD does do that alot . specially with my paint job .. or well lack there of ..

Tom Matano was a principal body designer on both the NA Miata and the FD RX-7, so it's not surprising to me that they share a common "look."
I've had both a '90 Miata (for 18 years) and still have our original RX-7 (since '94). Both great cars; had an Aerocharger on my Miata which improved acceleration to about equal to the FD. But the FD clearly outclasses the Miata on long trips, and is sufficiently rarer that few folks know it on sight.
"It is funny, when
the Miata was first being developed, the FD RX-7 was being developed,
and the FC was still going strong. So with the first generation
Miata, they told the engineers, design the car so a rotary can't be
put in there, no matter what. No way did they want the rotary in
the Miata to compete with the RX-7. And sure enough, the day after
it was released, someone figured out how to put a rotary in there.
So, there you have it."

I once at a car show overheard a father telling his son: "That's an RX-7... see how Mazda took design cues from the Corvette?"
Wonder which he meant? I assumed C5 since he arrived in one, but would hope he knew the 93 RX7 came before the 97 'Vette.

I've gotten the "cute" comment twice now as well, both at shows that are mainly muscle cars. And some guy who thought it was a miata, who then proceeded to tell me how awesome his ss monte carlo was....
Every now and then I do come across someone who actually knows what it is, but that's rare.

After owning a FD for many years and now driving a black viper GTS, the attention does not even compare. I can't go 10 feet in the viper without people staring and asking questions as if it is a $200k exotic - I spend more time talking to people about it than actually driving it.
It also has never been mistaken for a Miata

Late spring of 1994, and I'd had the car almost a year, yet then as now, it remained a relatively rare model to see in public. I was in Connecticut, and my brother back in Ohio was looking for an Eagle Talon/Mitsubishi Eclipse. I went out one weekend just to get some ballpark prices for him, and figured I'd test drive one just for the fun of it. It's sunny outside, and a glorious day for a drive in the FD. First dealership I swing into is a Mitsubishi shop. I parked within sight of the dealership windows without being too close, and walking down the aisles of cars out front, I don't see the requisite AWD Turbo GSX (or Talon TSi) models my brother is looking for. I go inside to talk with a salesman, telling him straight up that I'm not here to buy, but that I am here to scout for my brother. As we walk to his desk area, he commented on the bright yellow CYM paint on my car and said something to the effect of it being an attractive color for police eager to write speeding tickets. As I sit at his desk, he calls a sister dealership about 10 miles away and learns that they have a GSX there available for a drive. Sitting there, this is what I heard him say next into the phone:
"OK, great. You have a white GSX that's available for a drive. Super. I'll send him right over to your place. Yeah, I'll be sure and tell him to ask for you. His name is Mark, and he'll be coming over in a yellow Geo Storm."
