Rotary Export?!?! I've never heard this before. I was always under the impression that it was Rotary Experimental 7... Obviously 7 is the sequence number.

Can't believe someone who's not a newbie is asking this..

On a side note I always thought it meant "Rotary Xperimental 7" as well at least I thought I heard this used on an Option video somewhere.

The story goes the RX-7 is the SIXTH rotary engined model designed for export BUT 6 was considered an unlucky # in Japan so they called it #7 -
I don't buy that story - I think it was the 7th RE Export model and model # 6 never saw the light of day.

Why would MAZDA consider the RX-# cars EXPERIMENTAL when they came AFTER the proven COSMO 110 and R-100 models?
read Yamaguchi's books he states Rotary Export as the OFFICIAL meaning or the RX- designations.

Ok, so I really don't know my facts, but why would mazda call it a Rotary EXPORT, when they mainly stayed in Japan?

Because in JAPAN all the OTHER RX-# cars had different model names RX-2,3,4 etc were only used in the EXPORT markets (North America Europe etc) even the early RX-7s were called SAVANNAs in JAPAN. It wasn't until the RX-7 became a HUGE success in the EXPORT markets (NA) that RX-7 came into use for the JDM cars.

Ps I have gone through this before - SEARCH !!!!

Maxpesce, I wasn't doubting you and I don't at all. I wasn't saying you were wrong, just saying what I always thought. I figured you got it from the Yamaguchi book. Damn I need to put that book on my list of things to buy..
