What could be wrong with my car?

I was racing a friend tonight in an 08 impreza from a first gear roll through early third and he beat me fairly solid both times. I have full 2.5 exhaust w high flow cat, intake Pfs inter cooler, unless I'm mistaken I should've beaten him by a decent amount. My recirculation valves are both open to air and my boost gauge is only showing 8psi on both turbos. Engine only has about 40k on it and was replaced 9 years ago. It did sit in the garage for two years until I got around to replacing the omp. Idle fluctuates a bit between 7-9k I've done the rats nest simplification and removed/ blocked off all the smog junk. My manual boost controller is set the same as it was when I made it about 5 years ago. I'm kind of at a loss as to why he was able to pull away with ease and would appreciate any ideas those of you with far better knowledge may have. Thanks

Which Imprezza does he have? Subaru Impreza WRX? STI? The Subaru is a pretty good car, and with its turbo is/can be quite impressive.

A bit more information would help.

if you are only at 8 psi... that... may ... be your issue ....

FIRST check for boost leaks , check ALL your couplers make sure everything is tight and you dont have a boost leak there .

Also I've never used a MBC BUT maybe the MBC's got moved around , if all your couplers are fine specially the one that comes from the Y pipe that one tends to break .

Try adjusting them

NOW about you beating your firend . that all depends on his mods LOL

I'm sure he means 700-900 rpm.

Sounds like a 10mph to 80mph punch, which is the sweet spot for the AWD turbo subarus. You're also running less than stock boost on a 20 year old car which probably has many small issues hurting power delivery.

I owned a very low-mile original stock FD for a bit, and you wouldn't believe how hard it pulled and how nice the powerband is when everything is working 100% as intended by Mazda

It's a regular wrx w an exhaust and I did mean 7-900 for the exhaust. All the couplers are tightened down pretty good, I'm going to go through and double check all the vacuum hoses this evening and if all those are good I may tinker w the mbc a bit. Thanks again for the ideas guys.

I Have drive a 12 wrx as a daily and I will say that at off the line the wrx is going to eat your rx7, they are running a lower gear rated for "rally style" driving. Get him on a longer higher speed pull if you don't start eating in to the gap by the time you shift to 3nd then there is something amiss in your car

If your rx had the off the line of the wrx you would not ever move.... It would be one hell of a smoke show

Yeah, we both agreed that I'd pull away at higher speeds if we kept going. Guess I just didn't want to admit how quick those are. Ah well, rx7s are still more fun and look better.

If you really want to see the difference, when its raining one day get him to show you a stop and WOT pull in it. you will be gobsmacked as to how much power they can get on the ground off the line. rain + subie = fun

Get the car dynoed and you'll really know how your FD performs.
