Question At what coolant temp do you panic?

Obviously, you will have to have some kind of aftermarket temperature gauge to answer this intelligently, but I'm curious...

At what coolant temp do you panic?

I'm not sure how you would define panic, but perhaps pull over and shut your car off???

I have never seen above 92C on my PFC so I don't think I have any reason to panic yet...

When i see 115c i get worried and turn the fans onto high and take it easy, cause i never see about that EVER. But i think it can go much higher then that and you'll still be fine. The thermoswitch doesnt even turn on you fans to high untill something like 122c.

If you go over 230F (110C), you need to start taking measures to reduce the temps. At 235+, I would definitely pull the car over and run the fans, 240F, shut the car off.

However, you don't need to be as paranoid as many here -- the stock ecu doesn't turn the fans on until 221F (105C).

i've never seen above 93C. and that's only usually sitting in traffic. once air gets flowing it's rarely above mid 80's (usually around 80 under normal driving around)

While the car is running I never see higher than 88C. If I turn it off and let it sit for like 10 mins, come back the PFC will read as high was 109C, but only while cool coolant is flowing it, it quickly drops back down the 80's.

So I guess I'd panic at anything above 90C while I was driving, but thats evidently really conservative?

I'd only painc if I see 110c other than that I'm fine, my temps are normally around 94c to 99c while city driving and 88c to 94c at freeway's

I've never seen my water temp go over 106 C before but given that the boiling point of coolant with a 12psi cap is roughly 126 C that leaves enough room for error. As long as your coolant doesn't boil then you're ok.

230 is time to take some action. My car rarely gets above 200, and I like it that way.

You shouldnt turn your car off when it's getting hot, instead drive it around 60 mph and don't boost so that cool air can cool it down.

Sometimes I get a high temp spike on the PFC, however the temps usually hold about 15-20 degrees lower. For instance I'll have temps of 89 pretty consistantly but the peak will be 110

I'm not sure what could cause this. I'd theorize (with my limted cooling system knowledge) that It's either air tweaking the voltage levles in the system or the thermostat kicking over and letting hot water rush past the temp sensor.

Any other ideas?

911GT2, don't feel bad, I am the same way. My PFC usually reads about 89C (and I still have not put the new underbelly pan on) and when I am getting on it and come to stop and go it will shoot to 94C. I get all worried then. But it drops once cruising starts again. Everytime I come to a light I flick the AC button to click the fans on manually. After reading this thread I guess I am CRAZZZZY paranoid about engine heat and don't need to be.

Is there a help group fore this?

Yep, some of you guys are nuts...

Most motors make it at least 80k before o-ring failure and that's with the stock cooling system allowing 105-110C.

Obviously, you don't want to be running continuously at 110C, but there is nothing wrong with seeing 100-105C in the summer or on the track.

Thanks rynberg, I believe I am at step 2 of my 12 step process to overcoming "FD engine heat paranoia"

If you complete the 12 step course, and no longer have any engine heat paranoia, that just means that you have to start the course all over again. You should have "some" engine heat paranoia...... with ANY car

I don't start worrying about water temp until I see 230F (110C) and then I keep an eye on it. If it tries to keep climbing past that I begin taking action to bring it down.

I can't hope to get the car that hot without being on a roadcourse on boost all the time.

In California, where in the desert I can hit 120f ambient air, and on the coast 60-100f I keep an eye on it in traffic, and run my AC, which doesn't have any freeon in it anyhow, but turns of fans... anytime I'm doing less than 35mph...

I've seen it creep up towards 230f once or twice, and then I start getting paranoid, and try and get out of stop and go traffic, and take side streets... but I've never seen the stock gauge budge past 9'o clock position... so I monitor both, kind of like a doubble check...

I'm super paranoid and keep my fans running almost all the time in the summer. With the fans on the temps are always between 180f and 190f. At least according to my autometer temp gauge mounted in the thermostat houseing. Later.
