What the average price on a rebuild???

I am looking to get my FD3 Rx7 100k Mile rebuilt. I called Mazdatrix and they wanted $6500 with street porting and 2mm seals. I thought most guys out here were get them done with street porting and 3mm seals for $3000.

That sounds like an engine with no core deposit and all new parts. It's not a bad deal if you want everything "new". However, you can use used rotors and housing to end up much cheaper if that's what you are after. As long as everything is within spec, there is no problem with used parts.

I don't know how close this place is to you, but I've heard a lot of good things:

Check the West forum for local rotary places in SoCal.

Its often better to get this type of work done locally if you are not doing the removal/re-install and tuning yourself.

about $1800 for a rebuild with streetporting and up depending on the condition of your core motor, although my shop is in Norcal. Kevin Landers also has about the same as far as pricing goes if you don't mind shipping motors.

I like Jeff McCall at Rotary Power in gardena. Not the cheapest but not the most expensive. Great work.

Get yourself a Reman from Malloy Mazda or just go to PFSupercars and have Ray build you a motor. Either way you can't go wrong.

Called Rotary Extreme today. Jeff was very nice, but the estimate was quite high. In the 5-6k range. How come I keep on hearing about people doing rebuilds for 2500-3000 with street port and 3mm seals. Am I just calling the most expensive places???? Mazdatrix wants 6500-11000, and Rotary Extreme is in the 5000-6000 price range. I am thinking I might be better to buy a motor from RX7Store.net or Gothram Racing and install it and just ship mine back. Or maybe I should just ship my car to Texas. It would still be thousands cheaper than what these shops want to charge in Southern California.

BDC in Dallas builds motors for around $2200 or so depending on porting I believe.

He wants to do it locally. Personally, I can't blame home and think that's the best idea. Having it done locally, he'll be able to "personally" check up on the progress of the car. None of that long distance jacking around.

iforged,

What you have to do is "get specifics". Ask them exactly what those charges entail. Some places will use new parts for everything some have a stock pile of used but decent parts to use. Porting will also change between the two (i.e. a streetport from Pineapple is not going to be the same as one from Pettit). If someone is going to do 3mm rotors and they use new rotors, that's going to be almost $1500 right there before you get into anything else (about $650 per rotor and about another $300 for milling the rotors to use 3mm seals).

You have to find out EXACTLY what their price entails to know if you are getting a good deal or not. No offense, but it doesn't sound like you have done your homework on what a rebuild is and what questions to ask a rebuilder yet.

Hmmm... wonder how they all were obtained? The name somewhat implies a fraudulent activity...
