Well the FD started on fire Tonight

So its about 9:30 at night and a buddy of mine stops by. He has yet to have a ride in the good ol mazda. I take him out for a little cruise. Nothing major just having fun, obeying all the traffic laws. SO i take it out onto the highway and head towards home. I do a little pull from about 60 to 100 and when I let off my whole *** lights up like the fourth of July. At first I thought I was getting pulled over but upon further examination part of my bumper is on fire. I pull over and see smoke coming from under the hood.
Oh ****, I do keep a small fire extinguisher in the bin behind my seat. I pull it out and pop the hood. My whole intake is on fire. It took me less than five seconds to put out the fire. I dont know what i would have done if i didnt have a fire extinguisher. I towed it home and snapped a couple pics. I didnt even bother to really start looking into what caused it. Tomorrow I will start tearing it apart and also posting up some more pics. Just wondering about insurance, i have full coverage i was wondering if something like this is covered? Surprisingly Im not too mad, just glad I was prepared.

Most of it is just extinguisher dust but the major fire area was around the intake.

did your oil feed bust? the only thing around that area that might go up would be that.... OR your FPD might've went out on you. keep us posted.

I can tell you that there is nothing more helpless feeling than seeing your car on fire. Glad to see something can be salvaged from it all.

I had a fire just like this happen to me like three years ago. My fire looked to be coming out the bottom back of the UIM that later I found out it was leaky fuel injector o-rings. I did know I had a fuel leak some where because of the strong gas smell in the engine bay, But at the time I didn’t know **** about an FD so I took it to the dealer and a regular shop and both told be they didn’t smell anything or find anything on the car. But after letting the FD sit after a drive you would find a little fuel spot under the car. So I kept on driving the car normally for about a month till one day I decided to beat on it and I guess beating on it turn my exhaust manifold bright glowing red and that ignited the fuel and started the fire. The good news is I had full cover insurance with Allstate and it covered everything with no deductible. It ended up costing the insurance about $7,265 they have some accidental fire and something else I cant remember where you don’t pay a dime.

I dont get it before i got my car tuned it would throw flames and melt part of the rear bumper but after raising the horse power by 200 h/p [500 h/p] i no longer have any poping or flames.
What seemed cool must be caused by bad tunning! Plus i like not having to clean the carbon off of the bumper!

Have you looked inside the turbo yet Jeremy? I'm still scratching my head to link both symptoms to a single cause. The huge flames out the exhaust and the intake catching. My best guess is an total tubo oil seal failure that dumped a load of oil into the exhaust and turbo area that progressed into the intake when you came down to idle.

P.s. wash your engine bay asap. most of the dry chemical extinguishing agents are very corrosive to paint and metals.

+1 on the cleanin carbon off bumper thingy, my muffler doesnt shoot fire as far as i no( or so i think), but when i do pull my 7, not even to 6k rpm, when i do a shift, my muffler would make loud puffin noises and my friend was followin me once, and he said i blew smoke clouds outta my muffler , so i guess, any harder to my engine, my butt would soon be on fire as well

Picked up a 9lb Halon fire extinguisher off ebay for $40. Its been behind my driver seat since I had a fuel leak, and its staying there even though the fuel leak is gone.

Halon or Halon-replacements are best. No residue!

+1 or maybe a leak from one of the lines or FPR. Looks like the old pulsation leak fire pics I've seen.
