weird tranny

I just purchased an 93 rx7 touring about a week ago and am starting to realize some of its problems. I did expect problems because i got a good deal so now i need to fix them. I posted about a week ago and got no reply but now i have narrowed down the problems. It think the only really problem is the tranny, although the guy did say it was rebuilt less than 10k miles ago. I did try searching but i couldnt find anyone with the same types of problems but if you have a link then please send that.

The first thing is the weird idle cause by the tranny. When you are idleing and not in gear it idles perfect and usually about 800RPMs. But when you put it in gear weird things start happening. Some times it just starts to bounce up and down and one time it actually stalled. Other times it just goes up to like 1200rpm and stays there. I know for sure that the tranny is doing it because just going in and out of gear affects the idle. I know the clutch is fully depressed to the back too so i really dont know what it could be. I think it gets better after i warm up more but im not sure. What do you guys think.

The second thing is occasionally in first gear there is a weird grinding sound that happens anywhere from 3-5k RPMs but only at WOT. I comes from right under the center armrest area so i think its the tranny. I think it happened once or twice in second gear too. What do yuo thinkit could be???

I am going to try to replace the tranny fluid with redline and see if that helps. Thanks for your help.

Mike

I had a the same problem. I think it's just the ECU because when I switched to the PFC computer it stopped. The Tranny has a 1st and 2nd gear switch for some reason and maybe that messes with it. I put the old ECU back in for an emissions test and it did it again.

try this go under the car and unplug the first -second gear switch. do not ask which one it is ,look in the book. do get the repair book. . the grinding ? maybe a bad bearing. just a guess.

The bouncing idle could be caused by a bad clutch switch. I would check that out. I can't see how your transmission would make the idle bounce around without affecting anything else.

ok, i have been sitting in my car trying to figure out exactly what is happening and i have found a few new things...

When the car is in gear with the clutch fully depressed, the idle just bounces up and down a few times, more or less, and then gets smooth.

Also, when i press the brake it drops maybe 50 RPMs and then goes up like 100 when i let off. I dont know if this is normal or not. Also when the fan went on the RPMs went up about 100. I also dont now if this is a related or even a problem.

when i rev it to about 2000 or more it makes a thumping type sound on the way down and then stops at like 1200 RPM for a little where the thumping continuesuntil it drops to the normal RPM. i think this is unrelated.

My only mod is a gutted precat. After letting it sit for a little, the usual idle RPMs are about 800-900. The car doesnt smoke and the compression is good. Sorry for the long info, but im just trying to be as informative as possible. TThnaks for the help.
