Weird noise from rear end on reverse? Struts or something else?

Everything I reverse my FD I hear this weird clanking noise like a bad axel making a turn. Is it my struts that are bad or could it be something worse? Is this a common problem on FD's? I hope it's just an axel or bad rear struts. Sometimes I hear this even going forward in 1st. Please help.

listen to the rear end when you go over small bumps, odds are it's your pillowball bushings, they tend to go bad and they sound obnoxious.

I agree with polyfc. You might need new toe link bushings, too. Both are known to wear out.

Here's a web page I wrote about how to replace the pillow ***** without using any special tools:

Someone else has a page about replacing them with an inexpensive ball joint press from Harbor Freight, but I don't know the URL.

There is nothing rotary-specific about these -- any competent suspension shop should be able to replace them.

I have the same problem also. Athough I have bought the RE toe links and traction bars(not installed) I still think that I will need to replace the diff mounts.

Mine does it in reverse and in first and going over bumps. The only thing differnt is that mine makes this werid sqeeking noise when I get on it hard.

There is actually one other uncommon source of rear end noise:

The bumper support beam bolts. If any loosen the support beam will make a chalky sound sometimes when it shifts.

It can not be the struts because the 3rd gen cars do not have struts .Look for yourself they have shocks front and rear . Check the repair book it reads shock absorber and spring .

I'm sure he doesn't mean literal struts dude. Many people use it as a synonym for "shocks." Shocks is even inaccurate itself. If you want to be corrrect: "dampers."
