We pulled our first FD motor today

CowsniperRX7, IBNSOS, and I pulled the motor and tranny out of a '93 I'm parting. It was quite a chore, but we all learned a great deal. Although none of us were 100% what the hell was going on, we made it work. Here's a picture if anyone's interested,

No fire, but I've removed most of the body panels already, so it looks like ****.

I sold the motor and tranny to one of the guys--I'm going to drive down and help him put it back in--between the two of us, we should be able to pull it off.

Oh. Heh.

After looking at the motor, I didn't think there was a fire, either..heh.

Keeping the car for parts?

You don't have to know anything, with the FSM. Its just time consuming!

A write up would be nice I'm gonna be pulling my engine soon and was wondering if you could do a quick run down of things to watch out for or trouble areas you had and what you did to remedy them.

The only tricky part is pulling the ECU harness though the firewall. Other than that, it's very straight forward.

Off the top of my head:

Drain motor and tranny, remove airbox/IC/battery, unhook throttle cable(s) disconnect water and oil and some wiring on the drivers side of the motor, underneath the intake elbow. Take off the exhaust and remove some braces under the car so you can drop the front end of the PP frame, unbolt the drive shaft from the diff and slide it out of the gearbox. Take the shifter off from inside the car. Leave AC and PS pumps in the engine bay so you don't need to unhook their lines, need to get the belt(s) off first. AC pump bolts are easier to get to when you've got the engine lifted a few inches.

+ everything that obviously needs disconnecting/unbolting/removing to allow access or to let the motor come out. (hood, belly pan, etc)

Good job!
Take it apart is easier than putting it back together.
That car looks like it's lifted pretty high.
How long did the it take you guys?

Took a tad over 3 hours for the engine and tranny to come out with wiring harness. Spent a couple more hours doing misc. stuff. Now will come the fun part of removing my engine and auto and putting in that engine and manual hehe.

Biggest tip is labeling wiring harness. Its amazing how many connectors are on that thing!

Thumbs up Hay Same Here

Well almost the same
What a coincidence Cyberben3 I was dropping the Trans. last night around 6pm. If only we were neighbors we could have follow each other through these tedious experiences. It took a friend and I (never dropping a Trans. before) about 3 hours to do. No brakes except for the occasional wining about our arms hurting and fingers cramping. LOL Looks like you have you work cut out for you doing that install thou. Good luck I would like to give a big thanx to Lightning in a Word of Thunder for ther great write up on changeing out the clutch

It was quite tedious. The above reply from MKS was very accurate. You just disconnect everything that goes from the motor to anything that's not coming out with it.

One thing that I didn't account for was the piece of frame running from the rear of the tranny to the rear end (running alongside the driveshaft). Some of those bolts were a bitch.

Yes-- the car was jacked up high off the ground. I needed room to move around underneath.

Notes:

Put a jack stand under the tranny and rear end when removing drive shaft.

when you remove shifter, take a 2liter bottle cap, and scoop out some tranny oil--when the motor is lifted, the back of the tranny drops to the ground, spilling fluid.

take the wiring harness out GENTLY, and use masking tape to label each clip--it will save you a **** ton of time later. (this was the MOST time-consuming part of the whole endeavour)

I'd be glad to answer questions for anyone trying this in the future--drop me a PM. Good luck

The pice of frame?

The PPF?

When I pulled mine, I debated between pulling the motor and tranny or just the motor. I just pulled the motor and left the tranny in place. Worst thing with mine was that when I was removing the wiring harness, I broke a few clips. They are extremely fragile. Be careful when you pull your motor, I need to get new clips now and I have no idea where to get them. Any ideas?

Looks like you did all this outside? If so I'm sure glad I don't live in your neighborhood. I'm sure the neighbors wish you'ld clean up the mess unless their all motorheads with engines as lawn ornaments.

In response to later posts:

I bought the car for a number of performance mods for my car. I'm parting out the rest. I just graduated from college, and don't start work until march, so I have absolutely dick to do.

JONSKI--i trust the nodding heads are a compement--if so, then thanks.

This was done in the back of my grandmother's house. I cleaned up very well afterwards. There's just a car under a tarp now, it doesn't look badly.

We actually had a random 65 degree day on wed. It just so happened that we were pulling the motor that day. WE LUCKED OUT!!

I'm going to brag about the pulling, but the install will probably be another story. I told IBNSOS I'd come down to help him put it back in.
