Water leak (with pics)

Hi all,

My FD is loosing quite a bit of water through a little pipe near the oil drainage point:

Sorry about the crappy picture - its a bitch of a place to get a good shot! I originally thought it was the radiator hoses but as I now know it’s not

Its only seems to leak once the car is warmed up and the system is pressurised. Does anyone know where this pipe runs too? Its looks a little like a reservoir of some sort. I guess I need a new pipe, but not 100% sure yet as I'm waiting for the car to cool down again!

Thanks

Dave

I thought leaking oil/coolant was normal for an FD
jp - hope you find the problem. Just make sure before you do anything that it's not coming from somewhere above that pipe and dripping down.

That pipe is not your leak; there is no water there. One of the rubber turbo coolant hoses is failing and dripping onto that pipe. Do a search here for "turbo coolant hose" and you'll find everything you need to know.

I can't see from the pic too well, but my water pump gasket started going and it dripped onto the back radiator hose, making it look like the hose was bad. No matter what is wrong, get those turbo coolant lines before they get you.

Malloy Mazda. Ask for Ray Crowe. He'll ship them out to you fast. Just look up Malloy Mazda on yahoo. It should give you the Malloy automall at the top of your results.

You might want to look at the turbo hoses or find a picture of them before you order. If I remember correctly they are some generic size that you should be able to get at the local parts store and make your own.

Try here also: http://www.mazdatrix.com/bhose3.htm

Good prices and fast delivery (in the U.S., don't know if they ship overseas). Worth the call though... good luck!

Thanks guys

I love this forum!

The FD is in the garage for the winter now anyways, the water leak was one of the things on my to do list - in the middle of lowering her, brake overhaul, vacuum job , ghetto 99+ rear lights, storage bin conversion, new speakers - damn I've been busy

let me guess... you don't notice anything while drivin, but when you come at the red lights and need to stop there is a coolant smell entering the car??

It's a coolant hose behing the airpump that's leaking...

The fun doesn't stop there, but those are the ones most likely to break and leak copius amounts of your precious coolant. You should also change the ones on the ast and replace it with a metal one before it cracks and leaves you stranded. The other hoses don't fail as often, but I think you can get all of them at www.mazdatrix.com

my hoses weren't leaking, it was actually the hard pipes on the turbos, and it would only leak once warmed up. not saying that's what it is, just a possibility. i could see white residue from where they were leaking, and now i have no problem so i'm sure that's what it was.

Like I said. take the time to remove the airbox and air pipes towards the turbos to free up the area before the airpump. Once there you take out the airpump and you"ll see a smaal 15cm long coolant hose. That's the one you're looking for.
There should be another one on the back of the rear turbo witch you can see if you have a light at hand an shine between all the turbo components towards the transmission.

I didn't check that one yet but I guess it would be easier for that one to reach from under the car.

REPLACE ALL THE REST.

It's not a fun job, but it's quite important. The buzzer of death is not something to fool with.

The one above the air pump, the two turbo coolant hoses, the one behind the TB, under the TB, and the ones down in/out of the heater core.

turbo coolant hose. I have both in the plastic bags from Mazdatrix waiting to go on soon, just finished doing upper and lower rad hoses today, also the hose going from the AST to the rad.

Long needle nose pliers. The ones with the 90 deg angled tip help too.

Then I just cut off the old hose. The old hose pushed on, so I didn't need to get my hand in as far.
