Question wastegate rod questions

1. what will lengthening or shortening the WG rod do to the operating parameters of the stock turbos/stock wastegate controls?

2. with all else equal, how would a ported wastegate (vs non ported) change the operating parameters of the stock turbos/stock wastegate controls?

sorry for the vague questions... but it easier for me to ask questions first and exlpain my problems/why im asking later for simplicities sake. -heath

1. Make it not close all the way if it's too long, not open all the way if it's too short. Don't change it.

2. It won't change any of the controls, but it will stop creep from happening. You should definitely port the wastegate if you have the turbos of for some reason; even if you aren't getting boost creep, it's a good thing to do.

and if it doesnt open all the way??? what im getting at is if your WG doesnt open all the way would that effectivly set the boost at a particular PSI... or would the WG keep opening untill the propper PSI is met?

i have a ported WG and am getting a pattern like (quicky 14) then drops to 12-8-12. i was wondering if this could be caused by an impropper WG rod length? i dont want to screw w/ aftermarket boost control if its just the WG rod (which would seem to make sense to me)

The rod only needs to be adjusted when specification of the length is off. Check the length spec. and see if they match. If not then adjust it.

i know.... but i changed exhaust housings when i ported the WG, so maybe something is off...

but could someone please answer the theoretical question: would and improperly set WG length change your set boost pressure?? i cant find the answer to this and have searched a bunch

If the rod is too short, which is most likely is your situation since your boost is increasing, the wastegate will not open to its certain amount and will allow more exhaust to go through the turbine raising your boost.

so if im understanding this correctly (sorry for being a nuge, but i want to be very clear)... i CAN infact change the upper bound of the preset boost level, simply by changing the wastegate rod LENGTH?

yes, you can change (raise) the boost level since you are increasing the preload on the actuator spring by shortening the rod from stock. you will also lose a bit of flow thru the WG port since the flapper valve will not have as much stroke. both factors will raise the boost subject to the actions of the boost controller.
