a viper scoop on the fd hood
I am looking into having a scoop made like the scoop on the scoot hood to direct air into a horizontal ic that I have. Ive seen a picture of this done once and wasnt sure what type of scoop they used, how well it bonded etc. Any advice would be greatful as I didnt get much of a response from the interior/exterior section
It can be done. In fact I have seen a FD in Virginia that has a true Viper naca duct installed in the middle of the hood about 6-8" back from the front. The duct needn't be glassed in. If I remember correctly, the IC setup was configured to work in conjunction with the NACA duct in question. This is something that I entertained as an idea for my own car for a while.
Having said that, I was/am fortunate enough to know someone with an FD who had access to alot of instrumentation and an old hood to do testing, in view of his own custom made vented hood. He found that the engine bay was clearly and positively pressurized and that any NACA duct or any other induction duct was futile without any means of venting/depressurizing the hood.
He went on to install pressure sensors at many areas along the hood in order to determine where the highest negative pressure occurred and thereby establish the most effective vent slat position. I don't have precise details of his findings but assume that the location of these venting slats as we see them on Mazdaspeed and knightsport hoods pretty much coincides with what he has discovered.
All this to say that I have aborted the idea of installing any induction type duct to my car, no matter how cool looking I thought they could turn out.
Cheers.

It looks GREAT but I would NEVER EVER do it!
I like my car to be individual. I know there isn't many FD's around with those scoops, but what I mean is I don't want to make it look anything like another car (in this case a viper) and have people asking me if it's a viper and ****.
It's like putting Type R components on your SI. It might look good (sometimes) but it's making it look like a car it's not.

on the scoot hood... the vent in front doesn't do much, it runs all the way to the back then splits to two holes by the windsheid. if your looking to improve the airflow to a hmic... i'm not so sure that scoot is the best way to go...
