V quick CAT removal Q

Hi all,

Sorry for this dumb question, I dare say its been asked before but I've spent 40mins looking and haven't found anything...

I'm in the middle of replacing my entire exhaust system but two of the nuts/bolts on the cat are siezed and rounded, great!

There are two little nuts/bolts with what looks a wire running into the cat. I am assuming this is a sensor and I can just snip the wire but as it looks braided I thought it best to ask in case there is some weird fluid in there (I love this car for randomness)

So can I snip it and remove the cat or will I have to mess around and try and get the nuts/bolts out?

Thanks alot!

Dave

im pretty sure it just tells you when your exhaust is over-heating. nothing special.

You're not looking at the air injection pipe by any chance, are you? (the air pipe is a series of metal tubing and rubber hoses, about 1cm dia)

I think he is talkin about the grounding cable that was attached behind the nut.

Since he suspected it might have been filled with something, it suggests something more substantial than the ground wire.

DS2000: I suggest you download the factory service manual (it's linked in a sticky thread) and find the page with the catalytic converter. The piping and wires should be shown there.

Thanks guys,

Well it turned out that it was just for a sensor, I looked in the service manual and couldn't see a reference to it. I also checked to see if any lines ran into the cat (which I found hard to believe)

I'm glad you guys were as wary as me though, the fact it was braided really threw me

Ah! Hold the presses . Just realized you're from the UK. JDM cars had a heat sensor in the main cat itself with a braided wire going to it - I bet this is what you're referring to. I don't believe it's critical to the car's operation, and if you're replacing the main cat with a midpipe or highflow cat, it probably wouldn't be going back on anyhow.

If it's what I'm thinking about, the sensor is sticking out of the side of the main cat and bolts to the cat with a 2-bolt flange.

^ That sounds like it, both bolts had become rust so I had to cut the wire, I guess I best get some resistors for it now
