V-mount project

I'll be installing my V-mount (hopefully) within the next few months and I have a couple questions. It's a Rotary Extreme monster V-mount btw, and I'm concerned with the battery. First, is it required to relocate the battery or is there enough room to run a small battery (Fighter's Garage, Odyssey, small Optima etc) next to the IC? Second, I've been weighing the options on both. I've been considering just getting the Fighter's Garage MBK, but then I wondered what would happen if the battery died and there wasn't another small battery available on short notice...in that case it would be better to run a regular size battery in the passenger bin. However, if a small battery was available, would it be the right size to fit in the Fighter's battery bin? I still have to do more research on the measurements on each of those three batteries unless someone has the info readily available. I've also been considering which one to go with. We use Optima in our equipment in my job in the Air Force, and so far I've been very disappointed with the red top Optima, but the yellow top has performed well. We've recently discovered that the Optima batteries require reconditioning and a special battery charger to properly function after discharge/recharge. We ordered the special equipment and so far it's saved us about 75% of our batteries that would have otherwise been tossed. Back to the project at hand though...if I get the Optima I need to have access to one of these chargers, so that leaves me with either relocating the battery or going with the Odyssey or FG MBK, if the sizes are about the same.

What are your thoughts on this?

im not sure about the vmount but if you go with optima you will have to take the back out to get the battery in ben it wont fit thru the top of the ben.
and i have always heard the yellow is what everyone runs but the blue is meant for tight spaces and no ventilation. so blue would be better.

and there is a battery place here local that sells those mini batterys so it shouldnt be a problem for you unless you live in the woods.

Cool, thanks for the info. We have equipment at my home station (I'm deployed right now) on which we use blue tops, but we just started using them so I didn't have any feedback on them yet. Thanks for the heads-up. I didn't know the blue tops were meant for tight spaces and lack of ventilation, and I didn't realize the yellow top wouldn't fit in the bin either, thanks. It kinda sucks trying to do this on the other side of the world cause I can't measure anything on the car, haha. You're in Alabama? Does that local place sell them online? I'm in NC but I'm probably moving to Colorado Springs when I get back so the fact that they're local for you doesn't really do much for me, HAHA. Thanks alot though man, I appreciate it.

Any more feedback from anyone? Suggestions are welcome.

both the yellow and the blue top you will have to take the back out and place the battery in first then put the ben back in.

form a different thread a guy was having problems with his car draining the battery.

I was chasing down battery issues for over six months. It turned out that all I needed was new batery terminals& grounds. Another time my car was not starting after sitting in the garage over night. It turned out that my battery was toast, literally. Hawker mini batteries don't last very long under the hot hood.

You can take car to a shop and have them check the alternator. They can see if the car is putting out 14v while running. If that's not it it. You might want to fully charge your battery and then hook up a volt meter that can measure miliampsheck to see if your car is drawing current while the key is off. Then start pulling fuses to see if where the current is being drawn, then trouble shoot from there. Did you recently install ant new electronics? An amp may be left on. Or you have a short somewhere.

I'm betting that your alternator is going or gone and or battery...

Good luck.
so im just tryen to say look at the writing in bold.
and heat is a big problem with batterys under the hood.

Yeah you got a point, thanks. I think I see where this is going, haha. One guy in another thread was saying his FG MBK started every single time, but it's probably a case-by-case basis. Thanks again.

I have the Fighters Garage mini battery kit. It uses an odyssey PC-680 which is a pretty common battery, you shouldn't have any problem finding them. There is also a chain called batteries plus that has branches all over that sell them. Also there is a company called gruber that makes the pc-680 for a lot cheaper. As far as the V-mount goes I believe that the large version would require relocation of the battery any way, but I'm not entirely sure.

Thanks for the info! Yeah I was just wondering if the small battery would fit with the IC, the large/regular size would DEFINITELY have to be moved.

Hell yeah it is, and it's starting to **** me off that it's not finished yet. But when you have to deploy just to make some money to put into the damn thing, I guess that's how it goes, haha. It hasn't even ran since March so that's my first goal when I get back in Jan/Feb. And I should be moving (probably to CO) when I get back so you'll be seeing me in Vegas soon enough brotha, haha.

I personally don't like relocating the battery due to track rules and regulation where u must have a external switch. I'm using rotary extreme's Battery tray and PC680.

Most Vmount setups would work with a PC680. Rotary Extreme's IC kits all use that battery. Turbojeff also made a battery try like that. FighterGarage is probably the only one that still make trays for the FD using that battery. but your battery and IC would look something similar to this. (with bigger IC ofcourse)

^^ FDNewbie Vmount ^^ coming soon

^Well I was planning on viewing that tonight cause it comes up as a red x on government computers and I ended up not having a wireless connection to my laptop tonight so I'll have to go off just what you said, haha. Thanks all the same. I WILL look at it within the next few days.

Just a heads up, the blue Optima is marine use and will charge diffrenetly in a auto situation. You want to use red or yellow.

when my battery was purchase i was told the blue top was for marine use and because off the battery being in a closed in space(just like a boat) with no ventilation that it would be a better choice.

and yes it does cost more.
