V-Mount impressions

Simply put, R.E. did a great job with this set up. the install took me a full weekend by myself and after doing it once could probably do it again in half that time.

The most aggrevating part was finding a power steering belt that would fit since I deleted my A/C... Although you dont have to remove it, I wanted to.

I havent had a chance to drive it much after the install, but was sure to put it through its paces when I did. This system is BEYOND efficient. With outside temps around 75, intake temps fluctuated between 28-32 while cruising at highway speeds as well as after some VERY spirited driving at 13psi.... water temps dont budge past 86 (PFC)... The only problem is actually getting the car up to temp.

While in traffic I saw my intake temps in the low 40's and once I started moving they dropped like a rock.

This is def. a race car setup with versatlity. The faster you go and the harder you push it, the happier it is.

The only purpose of this thread is to provide a first impression..... and Im impressed.

I am extremely happy with both the looks and functionality of this system.. Kudos to Chuck for this set up........ Its the ****.

I have some pics, just have to resize them.....coming soon.

Ooooh baby. I am so excited now. What does the installation require?

I know it takes removing the old rad, old IC, old piping, and removing the front bumper. Anything else?

Bricktop,

what setup did you have before? Stock? Are you on stock twins or a single turbo?

Also, I am curious what happens in stop and go traffic and after turning the car off and letting it heat soak then driving it around....just curious on how quickly it "recovers"

DaedelGT - The install was pretty straight forward. I had my bumper off but think I def. could have done the install without removal. That would have been a big time saver. If you can turn a wrench you shouldnt have any problems. Are you keeping your A/C ?

7racer - I had the stock IC before this, everything else the same. As a comparison, running 13 lbs on the stock system and stock turbos had my intake temps pretty high on a day similiar in temp. Depending on how long the car is parked if it hasnt had a chance to naturally cool down and without running the fans, the highest Ive seen the temps in my parked car have been around 60 something. Once I start the car and move the temps plummet, and this is just from driving around town. Get onto an open road and it drops temps like a tach builds revs.

I was confused with the temperature number until I realized you gave outside temp in Fahrenheit while engine temp is in Celsius.

Do you have any comparable temperature number for similar ambient condition before the switch?

Looking at the V-mount, I'm guessing that if you put in a vented hood, your water temp would go up as air will want to exit through the IC rather than the water radiator.

I'm debating that very question. I know the coolant is really low and it needs a recharge, and I (about 95% of the time) almost always just roll down the windows, unless it's raining. How tough was the removal? What size belt did you finally end up getting? A part number would be nice

We need you to track test this setup now. I'd be happy to drive the car for you, so you log the data via laptop telemetry.

I personally dont like the way the set up looks, seeing fins on the IC core doesnt do it for me and that would problably be the only reason i would get one.

I checked out Tom's V-mount in person today at the autocross. It is very impressive. Everything appears to fit well and looks great. You want an effective intake? You can see the K&N filters from the front of the car!

Tom is getting some gauges so we can get his input regarding temps and things pretty soon.

BTW Tom, your FD is very, very clean. It was good meeting you.

I would like to see some pics of the set up if possible. I'm still considering between going front mount or something else.

We just finished installing this kit over the weekend. We started taking parts out Thursday night and finished it Saturday night. The only problems that slowed us down were classes, work, and a midpipe that didn't fit. We had an AC line cut and rewelded as well as a BOV flange welded to a pipe but those were completed in a single day and didn't set us back any. After installing it once, I think we could probably get it done much quicker. The only reason it wasn't completed a day sooner was probably the fact that the car went from a dp and catback as its only real mods through the full install of the v-mount, intake, GReddy elbow and BOV, midpipe, y-pipe, and PFC. Most of these bolt on parts were pretty quick to get done, but for other drivers who already have some of these mods completed, the install can be done without having to really get under the car. We also flushed out the coolant system and changed over to Evan's coolant for the new radiator. The system was very efficient and although I was driving in another car, I couldn't stand to get out and watch facial expressions as people walking by drooled over the bling factor of all the new parts(everything installed with the exception of the midpipe was polished). Special thanks to Chuck at RE and Jason at the store for they're quick responses and reliability with the troubleshooting. BTW, Chuck- I think we did figure out how to get girls in the car after we were done installing. Popping the hood on Main Street attracted ladies like diamonds and free cocktails were on the menu. Good luck to the rest of the members getting ready to install their systems. Its the best weekend project I've ever done. Don't be surprized if you wake up the next morning still smiling from the first test drive.
