undertray vent

I saw this on a japanese FD site its a underpanel with a vent in it. Im not a expert in airflow and I wanted to ask some of you guy out there if this is a good idea or not. with the vent being on the under the car. would it air be pushed up in the engine bay. or would the air flowin under the car pull air out of the engine bay thur the vent

here is a few pics

I think it would pull air out the bottom, but it's hard to make more than a guess at it. If we could see the radiator/IC setup and ducting above, it would help.

it really depends on which side is facing the ground. if the side you are showing is the underside, the air should be drawn out because the large vent is facing towards the back of the car, so the air going into the bumper will get pushed up and downwards, exiting this undertray as well as ur hood vents.

please pm me where u found that as well... i'd be very intersted in findint out where i can get one. thanks

Looks to me like the part showing is the top so it would probably draw the air into the motor bay. Pretty cool. I wouldnt mind getting some more info as well

the link was to a japanese auction site, the auction ended so there is no link to. I sent the guy a question about it. he said he didnt know how it work or who made it. he works for a junk yard that was parting out a FD.

My guess would be that the normal front air dams and noses make air underneath so turbulent that it's not too effective.

If you choose to duct "to" the radiator like that though, you'll have to duct all radiator air through that opening. Because air coming through the I/C will go right out the vent and skip the radiator, otherwise. You can't have two sources.

Now if that tray is set up behind ("from") the radiator, the vacuum of the air flowing under the car could help greatly to pull air through the radiator.

That looks relatively easy to make, just sheet metal with pop rivets. I might try making one, since i dont have an undertray.

It appears to be a tray designed for a V-mount radiator setup.

On a stock setup, the radiator is positioned in the opposite direction (airflow goes upward through the radiator, not downward), so that undertray would not work. It would just let air bypass the radiator.

EDIT: Whoops, didn't notice the lips on the trailing edges of the undertray. Now that I look at it, it appears to be some sort of additional vent setup for a radiator in a FMIC setup. There was probably some sort of lip attached underneath to help direct airflow into the vent.

I saw something like this in a mag for a V mount set up like you said. Ill have to get a scanner and scan it.
