ULTIMATE SOLUTION to the 3k rpm problem!
OK here is the backround.
My terminal was so bad on the negative side that I could simple pull it off whenever I wanted to without tools!
Finally When my MP3 player picked up engine noise I knew I would have to do something about it.. So I went to Napa. the Manager and I are GREAT friends.. I can get just about anything @ cost Cant complain right ?
So while I try to buy just a terminal he tries to sell me a cable that has a terminal. I wasnt crazy about the idea but he said he would = out the price ( $2.. not much to loose!)
So I buy the damn thing. Get it home.. By this time im ready to go back and get the terminal end.
Well this is what I bought and how I set it up:
Thats the part # so you can go buy this!
Overhead view!
Thats where my 2 cables lead to.. One is from the battery kit, one is from Pettit! Both go to the battery Negative terminal! Then one connects to the engine just uinder the Alternator.
And then I cut off the stock piece o crap and simple stuck it to the side..
Before doing this my idle was hunting. The car would stall now and then. for no reason and the Mp3 player whines like a Miami Bitch And the 3k problem was bad enough to make you kiss the steering wheel!!! It was aweful!
Afterwards
Idle is DEAD solid @ 500rpm.. Engine rev's tighter. The mp3 player is sounding better then ever and the 3k hestitation is GONE! I mean I cant get it to do it no matter how hard i try... Its perfectly smooth!
I HIGHLY SUGGEST THIS TO EVERYONE regardless of BMK's or stock batteries, PFC or no PFC Its the way to go!!
Give it a shot... And for $4. It will impress you!

I have tried all kinds of grounding stuff, and the 3K hesitation always came back on me. I think grounds work on some cars, but not all. And some cars don't even have the 3K hesitation in the first place. I would not pass judgement on the effectiveness of a grounding solution until you have driven the car for a while (at least a week). My hesitation would go away each time I added a ground, but it always came back later. It sounds like you are aware of the possibility, but resetting the ECU seems to fix the problem temporarily.
What did finally solve the problem completely was switching to the PowerFC for engine management. Anything that eliminates the stock ECU is likely to have this effect (Haltech, Wolf, etc.). I had a PFS "purple box" and it did nothing for the 3K hesitation. I also hear of people with remapped ECUs having the 3K problem persist if they had it in the first place.

Did you leave your previous unit (stock?) in the car and add the empeg or do you just have the empeg. I got the add on radio tuner so I'll be pulling the stock POS units out.
What color faceplate do you have on it, the red matches the orange/red of the gauges but I like the look of the blue, so I'm undecided what I'll use when I install mine come spring.

i just saw AROSPEED has a ground wire kit out, i know they are usually consider a rice company and all, but someone might want to check into that wire kit, it looks very similar to that japanese fd wire.
