if you're using the locknut technique, I'd suggest using different size nuts. If the bottom nut is bigger, it will make it possible to use a socket wrench to torque on the bottom nut. Othewise, just use a combination wrench.

OMG dude you put the vise grips on the part at the base where there is no thread.
I have swapped several and never had any problems.
Throw a rag on the stud if your worried about chewing threads.
It's not a hard thing to do.
