Question Twin install....myself or a mechanic?

Ok guys, I have a set of twins on their way out. I am blowing oil through, and seeing blue smoke on acceleration.

I have found a set of used twins to buy, and I am wondering if I should attempt this install myself or not. I have done quite a bit to my car...but is this a huge pain in the a$$ or what?

I have done the DP/Cat back/ manual boost controller myself...but I don't want to screw anything up on the turbos.

I had my rotary mechanic quote me $225 to install the turbos...plus gaskets. Should I even bother doing it myself?

Also, do I need to lubricate the used turbos before I put them in..or do anything else to them before I install them?

Thanks,
Patrick

having just done the vacuum job, it wouldn't have taken me much more to install turbos had I needed too. If you've done the vacuum job before, i think installing turbos would just be an extension of that and not too difficult. But for 225, thats a very good price for installing them considering that if anything goes wrong its his ***. If I were spending big money to get new turbos I would definitely spend the extra 200 bucks to get them installed (assuming installer offers guarantee) just so you have someone to blame if somethings f'd up.

$225 sounds very reasonable to replace the turbos. I would pull the EGI fuse and turn the engine over a little to push some oil and coolant through the turbos.

I agree with the with the others, $225 is very reasonable. I just put a new set on mine 3 weeks ago, it is more time consuming then difficult........clearing out components for access and reaching some of the fasteners. It would have been much easier on a lift. Unless you want the experience or your not sure of his work, pay him and be done.

Any more input guys?

Also, I am not buying new turbos...I am buying used ones. I am trying to keep the cost down.

I doubt he will warranty anything but the work. I am sure if something isn't hooked up correctly he will fix it.

He is a good guy.

I am leaning toward doing it myself. I would love to save the $200-300. That is money toward new tires...

Later,
Patrick
