turbo timers?

I just recently got a 1994 RX7 and had a few questions for anybody who could give me answers. I was looking at turbo timers, blow off valves, and boost controllers. Was wondering if anybody could me any advice on good products to go with. I was looking at Greddy for turbo timers, blow off valves, and a Greddy Profec B for a boost controller. I also noticed that APEXi had blow off valves. Didn't know what to go with and just wondered if anybody had tried any equipment they could suggest. Thanks for the help!

i have the new greddy autotimer and i like it very much. also i think everybody will agree with me here when i say that the profec b boost controller is one of the best boost controllers for the money that you can buy. imho i would not get the greddy bov if you are looking at a type s. the type r is much better. i currently have a blitz bov and i would like to switch to the apexi one just for a change of pace. i have not heard anything bad about the apexi unit. although on the greddy type s i have heard that it looks boost and the valve is prone to getting stuck.

I posted on timers a while back... can't find the post right now but essentially I quoted an engineer from Garrett (sp?) who said that, especially for water cooled turbos (like ours), timers are not necessary. As long as you don't shut the car down while the turbo is still spinning, as far as turbo health goes, a timer isn't going to do anything good for you. There is some thought that a timer might be good for maintaining water temps while the motor cools down for healtheir o-rings, but I seriously have my doubts as to weather or not that actually does you any good.

As far as the other stuff goes, I have my opinions, but opinions are generally worthless without some facts behind them so I'll keep my mouth shut on those issues.

Have fun & don't get too paranoid. hehe

well since i am single turbo and i no longer have the water cooled aspect of the car. i choose to have the timer. i know what you are saying about oil and water cooled turbos and i agree with you. really when it comes down to it its your choice.

I don't see why you need a turbo timer, are you that in a hurry to where you couldn't spend 1 to 1 1/2 minutes with your car idleing? Just finish a song, start a song. I just don't get why I need a $100.00 machine to idle the cr for me when I can do it and monitor the readings. $100.00 can go somewhere really useful like an AST tank maybe.

It pays off when you are in a hurry, and you don't have to worry about warming up the car and staying in it. I love my Apex'I.

OT, but change the fluid. When your clutch starts slipping, that's when you need to replace it.

lol, the clutch is still slipping.

I'm still working on the job thing (had one offer, but had to turn it down. Just not my thing). Just waiting for the new year and Sprint to hire consultants to fill all those positions they laid off.

As soon as I get a new job, I'll order the clutch/flywheel package and the other goodies for the winter work.

BTW, I think turbo timers are not needed, but not a complete waste. If you have the money and want one, why not. Just a little added security for the car. However, just as other people have said, it's not going to do the car any good to do 10 laps around a track and then expect your TT to cool your car. The car cools by air moving into the engine bay. You should always drive your car after those hard runs without boost to allow the air to come into the engine bay and cool things down.
