Turbo shaft play?

Saturday had a turbo coolant hose blown so I took apart also the intake of the primary just to see the shaft play, results about 2mm of play.
They still boost 10-8-10, the question is are they about to become history soon?
No oil burning what so ever.
108K on them.

Thanks.

if it spins freely inside the housings w/o any rub or noise then youre okay. . . shaft play is prior to leaking. . . if it doesnt leak and doesnt rub. . . youre in the clear. no, im not saying shaft play is good, but youre probably okay for a little bit. . . wait, 108k miles? hmmm. . . if its the original engine. . . start saving money and get ready for a rebuild on both or new stuff. your turbos are probably fine, but you need to keep an eye on funds cause youre coming about due for a total rehaul.

paul. . . bringer of great news. hahaha

It spins freely and no rubbing so far.
I'm on my second motor which has 28K miles on it,
turbos are the same, never been rebuild.

ouch man. . . its highly recommended that you do them both at the same time. youll probably be needing a rebuilt set soon. if you have the time and money you might wanna go ahead and knock that one out. contact bryan at BNR supercars. he can get you a reasonable price.

Most likely I will make this a winter project, since is getting colder now I don't like driving in rain and snow. I'll probably even rebuild'em myself but I'll first talk to BNR may not be worth the sacrifice doing them myself.

People that say you shouldn't have shaft play don't really know what they are talking about. There HAS TO BE shaft play, it is the clearance between the shaft and bearings for the oil to do it's magic.

I'd suspect you probably don't have 2mm play, that is like .080" which is a lot. Like others have said, if the compressor isn't hitting the housing then your OK.

I did spin the wheel and it didn't hit the sides, I tried pushing the nut in a side as much as it would go and spin it at the same time to se if it hits the sides but it was ok didn't tuch.

I never knew either that it needed a litle shaft play for oil to properly lube stuff in there.

as others have stated a little radial (side to side) play is completely normal. but i thought i would add that axial play (in and out) is bad. and if it was rubbing the housing at all you would hear the whine of death anyways.

Original turbos at almost 130,000 miles. Perfect boost and no oiling. Original motor lost a rear apex seal at 98K but it didn't go through the turbos.

Wow that's impressive 130K miles!
I had also a brocken apex seal on the rear rotor in 80K.
My mech. said that the turbos where superb so I didn't bother massing with'em at that time.
They still going strong but the play kinda scares me.

Oops. My car only has 120,000 miles (but the turbos are original!)
